169.The following appeared in a letter from adepartment chairperson to
the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a
small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living
in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic
area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers
and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire
staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of
each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to
be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in
this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a
chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our
offers."

The department chairperson recommends that to attract thegood employee, the Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse ofthe new faculty. To support the conclusion, the chairman also cites the professorsare happier living when their spouses also work in the same place. However, theargument relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincingas it stands.

To begin with, the author cites the professors are morewilling to live in small towns while their spouses also get a job in the samegeographic area. However, the chairman fails to point out that whether the professorwant to live in small towns if their spouses don’t work with them closely.There is the most possible that the employees still like to work there and theydo not care their spouses working’s geographic location. Also, the author failsto provide any information about the survey population; therefore it isimpossible to determine whether the survey results apply generally to allprofessors in Bronston College. Thus, as it stands the study is statisticallyunreliable and lends no credible support to the author’s conclusion.

Then, the author draws a conclusion that to hire the mostgifted teachers and researcher the Pierce University should give the jobs tonew faculty’s spouses. However, the chairperson can not rule out other possibleexplanations for the professors more willing working in Bronston College.Perhaps, the professors love the natural and humanity environment in BronstonCollege. Or perhaps, the teachers and researchers are fond of weather, locationor traffic in the city where Bronston College is. No sufficient factors showedabout the faculty work in Bronston College, the author can not conclude thatthe people like to work in Bronston College because of their spouses’ joblocations and Pierce University should take an action to accept the rules tooto hire the better faculty.

To sum up, theconclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis doesnot lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To strengthen theargument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the studyabout population information. To better evaluate the argument, we would needmore information regarding the other explanations about people working inBronston College.
