I guess you are also in the Bio research field in US now, then you might know what working full time as PhD student mean.

If one or two basic statistics courses, it will be OK as basic statistic is needed in this field. Our departemnt even offers own statistics course as a core that everyone need to take. Or if the lab works with Bio-statistics, it is all-right.

But if for another whole master degree, then there will be some porblem dealing with department policy and personal funding budget. Money is not that negotiable especially when you need to put it into your budget. If this degree and advaced courses are not needed in the funding supported project, the prof will have some risk of lost the whole funding, if known by NIH or other funding resources. Simple because some buget policy does not allow that. There are some budget with looser policy, then it is OK for the policy part, but still some risk.

And for many bosses, and actually we all know, it is clear impossible to work as good as it used to be when the guy is pursuing another un-related degree and certainly will not work in the lab's field again. So, most bosses will feel unhappy if you do so, if they are nice and do not stop you to do it, you still will have a not as good life in the lab.

Actually, I saw some people get kicked out because of un-needed courses, which I think might not be a bad thing.

Anyway, there might be some cases that is not usual in some department like yours. But for most cases, when this kind of thing happen, there are some under desk stories you do not know, even you know the people a lot, unless you do it yourself.

I think for some nice boss, it might be OK to pay it yourself, as some post-doc do so.
But as I cited, most boss would not take the risk of loosing the funding to do it.

路有很多条，选择走哪条就根据自身和环境做不同的选择好了

How many cases you know? Maybe LZ should go to your U.
If you share the the deparment's information, it will be good for the following Chinese student to change their major to statistics.
As, it is a rare case and the information will be very helpful.

But if interested in physch, people can just try apply for it as they tend to recruit people from different background.
I have a friend simply switched PhD to master and then re-applied to physch without taking any course - no background at all. Havard offer.
This might be a choice if someone interested in physch.

我说得是最干脆脱离生物的方法

如果你还要纠结生物里面找 若干年以后 同样有就业饱和的问题

而且这样转的代价原比本科生重读本科大

现在这个生物坑是政策性造成的

一大把博士都在读postdoc

本科三年 根本算还没入生物这行

一个生物男成功的path 本科4年+博士最少5年+两轮postdoc4年+tenure前4年
这都是成功人士
大部分只是读完7，8年博士 接着在博士后这一轮轮回

我是想着如果出国读生物phd的话，完了就回国到二线学校做老师，感觉还是有需求

另外就算要跳出去也远没有sat或高考的必要吧 57# atypia
