In this statement, the speaker suggests that only artists but not critics, who bring us artistic works with lasting value. However, I cannot agree with the speaker completely. In my observation, both artists and critics have their contributions in helping us appreciate and understand great artworks.
Turning first to the artists who create lasting value for our society. I strongly agree with the speaker that artists from different periods of time over the course of human history have brought us innumerous artworks of great value. These precious artworks come from every field of arts, including architecture, music, painting and literature. For example, the Parthenon in Greece has long been a sign a human civilization and our understanding toward the nature and the universe. And consider the immortal paintings of Michelangelo on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel. They have been appreciated and appraised by people for century after century. And what about the symphonies composed by Beethoven? People of generations have constantly been inspired by the power and spirit lies within them. Also in the field of literature, classics from Shakespeare and Balzac have always helped us in understanding ourselves and the world around us.
Turning next to the critics who help discover the lasting value for our society. The primary reason why I disagree with the speaker is that in some circumstances we cannot be aware of the true value of certain artworks due to some individual limits and because the unique talent and greatness of artists are sometimes ahead of time and far beyond the understanding of the general mass. In this case, the accumulated knowledge and keen perspective of the critics toward some particular artists can help us understand and appreciate the great value of the artworks. For example, perhaps it is impossible for someone who does not have any idea of the Impressionism to appreciate and understand the Impression Sunrise or the imaginative Starry Night from Monet. Or consider, if no critics exist there, how can westerners understand the meaning and atmosphere of Chinese paintings? In short, critics help the general public to discover the value in the artworks thus strengthen the value of artworks in itself.
However, it is also possible for both of the artists and critics to make some mistakes in bring us art works that possess lasting value. On the one hand, it happens that there are some artists who place a high value on either the financial rewards or the reputations but rather the true value of the artworks. On the other hand, examples abound in history that critics sometimes have a stubborn adherence toward the traditional artworks and are unwilling to welcome and insensitive to feel the new trend. Consider Vincent Von Gogh. The great artist spent all his life up in the attic or down in the basement, and did not sell even one of his paintings. It is after hundreds of years that both critics and the general public started to review them again, and found the true value lies within these artworks of immortal love and enthusiasm for life and world.
In conclusion, both the artists and critics entitles values that last for long to our human society, without neither of which, we can never have the unique eye to see, the unique ear to hear and the unique soul to feel our life and our world.
