Experiences, in my opinion, have the major influence on our personality and development, other than the characteristics we are born with.
In spite of the powerful genetic influence, experiences can rebuild our personality. A child growing up in praises and encouragement is unlikely to be pessimistic, although there might be the danger for him to become conceited. On the other hand, a Jewish child born in Germany in World War II, no matter how optimistic characteristics he had been born with, might feel lonely and worried about his life all the time, which, to a large extent, might lead to a depressed, hopeless and helpless personality. Take myself for an example, four years’ college life has changed my reliance on parents and I gradually become independent and decisive.
En addition, experiences, to a large extent, influence the way of our development. A prince brought up in a peasant’s home might grow up to be a perfect farmer. A murderer might not have gone so far to commit such a crime if he had been better treated and the hatred in his heart had not been provoked. My best friend, Vivien, whose father is a successful lawyer, has long taken fancy for law and there is almost no doubt for her to go to law school after graduation from senior high school. However, our trip to the AIDS Village in Henan Province totally changed her mind. On seeing the patients suffering from AIDS, she could not stop her tears and determined to choose nursing to be her major in college and help those who are fighting with diseases.
On the other hand, the characteristics we are born with also have some influence. As a proverb goes, “Like father, like son.” However, this kind of influence seems minor when comparing with the influence of experiences.
In conclusion, experience definitely have the major influence on our personality and development. |
