To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.

It is a controversial justification that to be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, which is somewhat popular these days. One is fraught with problems of defining the morality, ethics and successful leaders. As far as I am concerned, I agree with that as a successful leader he/she should have a good reputation with good morality and ethics. However, the highest morality and ethics may be too difficult to reach and it is not a measure for a successful leader.

Primarily, in the business realm, a successful leader needs the morality. We can not imagine that a company does intentional harm to its customers and the society in which way they can win the trust and respect from its customers. We can not imagine that when the incident that the company discharges a toxic substance that threatens the lives of the people nearby is exposed in the scene, the people are willing to allow it to have a permitted license. If the leader of the company has no morality, the company may lose good reputation and decrease the percentage in the market. If the leader has no morality, the company will not achieve the lone-term pursuit of profits. If the leader has no morality, the company may be out of business and banned by the government. Without the moral standard the leader can not survive the company let alone the making-profits.

In the political realm, similarly, the morality is very important to become a successful leader. Consider the notorious leader Hitler who created the great humanity slaughter in the human history. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have to leave their home with the great horror and severe pain under the shadow of war and most of them lost their lives. It is he that violated the basic public morality to obtain and wield his power and eventually he forfeited his leadership. In short, without the morality, in the short term, the leader preserves his power; in the long term, such behavior results in the downfall of the leader.

However, the highest moral and ethical standards are difficult to reach and they are the only measure for a successful leader. For example, President Kennedy had much marital indiscretion that was considered personal ethical failings. Yet in the citizens' heart few would agree that these personal moral choices adversely affected the ability to lead. Another example is IBM founder Thomas Watson who is a hero in our era leading the arrival of informative age. But in his early year he had some records that he had the trade with Nazi. It is no deny that he had some dark side in his life. But as a legend, could anyone replace him to do the same thing with the same results and the contribution to the society? In short, we can not use the standard of morality to measure the ability of a successful leader.

In sum, a successful leader should have the moral and ethical standard for the long-term survival. But the ability of leading, communication, and creative thinking and the broad education are required for the success of the leader. We can not judge the success for a leader by the highest moral standard. It is involved in complex and complicated factors such as the political, economic surroundings and the personality of the person to influence the success. Thus we should see it more completely and fairly.
