ISSUE170 - "The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."
While the achievements of these people are significant and sometimes insightful, the people with a larger number might play more crucial roles in our everyday life and contribute more to any democratic society. I fundamentally agree with the speaker' assertion that we should focus more on the welfare of all the citizens instead of those few elite people.
Admittedly, the achievements of the people who are in the upper class of our society primarily promote the evolution of the civilization of a country. Consider that laws enacted by the legislators balance the competing interests of the society, that the paintings of an artist give us a sense of beauty, that the innovations of the scientists alter our every life. Consequently, without the achievements of our most advanced people, our nation will lose its greatness.
However, all of the people provide the basis on which those elite must rely. The whole society provides the essential living material for all of the citizens including the elite. For example, the Soviet Union is very strong in the military--which can dominate the world as well as the America. However it is poor at ensuring the basic living standard of its citizen, which amount to the disintegration of the country. Moreover, to elevate the warfare levels could, in turn, generate the preeminent people for a nation. In short, the welfare of the people and the achievement of the preeminent ones have interconnected relationships with the public in a primary basic position, and the few ones in and subordinate position,
And furthermore, the benefit that brought by those famous people accelerate the elevation of the warfare level. And the public also determined the research direction of those elite by their criticism and suggestions. In other words, the most excellent people cannot exist independently and disregard the requirement of the public. If those people do not pander to the interests of the public, they would lose their market.
In sum, the welfare of most people serves as a more essential role to the nation as a whole. Admittedly, the evolution of the nation is largely be pushed by the few preeminent ones. However, the high-level warfare of all citizens provides the birthplace of the famous people. Thus, only we improve the welfare level, can we make the nation a greater and more civilized place in which to live. |
