5.The following appeared in the business section of a newspaper.

"Given that the number of people in our country with some form of arthritis is expected to rise from 40 million to 60 million over the next twenty years, pharmaceutical companies that produce drugs for the treatment of arthritis should be very profitable. Many analysts believe that in ten years Becton Pharmaceuticals, which makes Xenon, the best-selling drug treatment for arthritis, will be the most profitable pharmaceutical company. But the patent on Xenon expires in three years, and other companies will then be able to produce a cheaper version of the drug. Thus, it is more likely that in ten years the most profitable pharmaceutical company will be Perkins Pharmaceuticals, maker of a new drug called Xylan, which clinical studies show is preferred over Xenon by seven out of ten patients suffering from the most extreme cases of arthritis."

This argument seems, at first glance, to be well-presented and reasonable. However, after a careful and thorough thinking, there appears some flaws in this passage. And the conclusion that the Perkins Pharmaceuticals will gain the most profit in the medicine industry.

To start with, the evidence used to prove the idea that Perkins will become the most profitable pharmaceutical company is not enough. The readers may wonder why Perkins will become the most profitable pharmaceutical company in ten years. And there are several facets of this problem. As the author says, the Perkins could make a new drug called Xylan. Maybe the author tends to tell the readers that this new drug will bring Perkins a huge amount of money. However, he/she never provides the details of this new drug. Has the Perkins company got the patent of this new drug? How many years does the patent last? Will this new drug cause unpleasant side effects to patients? It mentions in the argument that Xylan is preferred by patients suffering from the most extreme causes of arthritis. Maybe this new drug is really efficient in relieving the pain, whereas the patients who use Xylan may find it easy to get dependent on the drug later. What about other patients who suffers from light arthritis? That is to say, not all the patients would like this new drug. Another problem of this new drug is that whether it is much too expensive. If the product of Xylan costs the company a lot, Perkins would surely sell this drug at a high price. It is possible that the patients couldn't afford it and still choose the Xenon as they used to.

Another point the argument holds that other companies, including Perkins perhaps, will be able to produce a cheaper version of Xenon since the patent of Becton on Xenon expires in three years seems to be irrational. For Becton has been making Xenon for years , it may have got the most advanced technology and equipment. As a result, Becton could product high quality medicine at a low price and win the patients' high favor. Even if other company could produce a cheaper version of Xenon the patients will buy the Becton's product only because of its repute.

Finally, the statement that the status, the most profitable Pharmaceuticalls, of Becton would be replace by Perkins is illogical. The readers could suppose Perkins is able to make profit of the new drug Xylan, but it doesn't mean Becton couldn't produce this kind of medicine and gain profit of it. Becton could just make the Xenon as their main product while producing other various of medicine. It may turn out that Becton, rather than Perkins, is still the most profitable pharmaceuticals in the future.

All in all, the argument which seems to be logical at first is not perfectly presented. It could be improved by adding evidence that the correlation is in deed a relationship--that the producing of the new drug Xylan and the expired patent of Becton make the Perkins to be the most profitable Pharmaceutical company.
