TOPIC: ISSUE170 - "The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."

Is the surest indicator of a great nation the general welfare of all its people rather than the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, as the speaker contends? I agree with the statement that the general welfare is of vital importance to assess the nation. However, the accomplishments in science, art and political spirit are more significant.

First and foremost, the general welfare, say, stability of the society, security of its nation and solidarity of the cohesion, are of great significance in evaluating the nation's power. It is hard to believe that a country suffers from both social ferment from within and durative intrusion from without would be a super power in the world. The same goes for other elements such as medical system, traffic system, economic stability and sustained proliferation of its cultures.

Nevertheless, the achievements from its political leaders (or rulers), artists, scientists paved the way for the whole development of the nation. While we claim that the success of any super power in this world is not the sheer accidents in the long and winding history, we know that the concerted efforts of its scientists, artists and political leaders have given rise to the most spectacular development in the procedure. If we look back at history, we see a very clear pattern of science slowly changing our lifestyle and broadening our horizon. This development shows no sign of ending, and it is this awareness that aligns us and leads us on a continuous path to growth and progress.

Furthermore, art, serves as its role to sublime and purify human spirit, has purged our soul from sloth, wrath, lust and greed. While appreciating Picasso's famous painting, Guernica, we could put our hands on the pulse of hearts of the dirt and sin that has tortured and wrenched us in the war, showing a mockery of the wretched life of human species. Political leaders, such as the presidents in western countries, helped us define the true value of a nation by making inspiring speeches, attending important meetings and dealing with the national affairs. They serve as the spiritual leaders at difficult times and rekindle the hope of all the people in the chaos of darkness.

Moreover, the achievements that scientists, artists and rulers made can in turn lay the foundation for the general welfare. The invention of the computer, which was first made for military use, has become the most beneficial tool that has made our world a different realm of existence; the revival of Learning, has propelled the course of human civilization forward in the course of human history; the announcement of the Declaration of Independence, has laid the foundation of the glorious development of United States. Each of them has contributed to the overall welfare which has changed our life in all walks of it.

From the analysis made above, we may safely conclude that the development of science, art and political spirit has ensured the overall welfare of the people. However, our obligation to survive and flourish relies more on ourselves and we will never lose heart on the road ahead.

Does making things simple requires[开头就来一个语法错误。。。汗死了~应该是require吧？？] more effort and courage than making them bigger and complex[记得than是同级比较的], as the speaker claims? In a sense, I agree insofar as when[不知道这个when到底要不要。。] dealing with humanities problems. When it comes to scientific research and investigation, we need to dispose it systematically and comprehensively, which may require big and perplexing methods.
提出论点：对于人文问题=>赞同，对于科学发明=>否认（分领域讨论），还有否认复杂化不需要努力和勇气
First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that making thing simple and easy is an efficient method we use in dealing with humanities problem. While dealing with some big and convoluted problems, it is a crucial method to analysis the problem into small phases[参考下这句话：We can resolve the problem into more elementary items.我们能够把这个问题分拆成更基本的细目。] and settles[settle] them one by one. Furthermore, that people should always create something new and difficult seems to be a propensity inherited in human nature, which, on the other hand, could possibly makes[make] those people famous for their specious originality.[不好意思，这句话没看懂是想表达什么意思。。。] Therefore, it is a crucial task for us to change the kind of use and wont and make things as easy as possible.

Despite the merits of the speaker's claim, however, I disagree with the statement that making things bigger and complex does not require real courage. With the rapid expansion and inflation of modernization[我不知道这样说是否地道。。], each subjects and branches[错了啊] in science and technology have developed into a mode that most of us can only learn a tip of the iceberg. The subject of computer science and technology, for example, can no longer be achieved by a single person. Every single advance in science and technology should and only should be achieved by thousands of, or even millions of, us striving for a lifetime in the era of our time.

Finally, and perhaps the most significantly, big and complex things are all formed by the single and small ones, and thus making our world a different realm of existence. The house we live, for instance, is certainly a complex and time-consuming work of the bricklayers. However, with every brick laid upward, we could reach the empyrean[这个词不恰当吧？]. The same goes for architecture, sculpture and computer program. Moreover, if we look at history, we see a very clear pattern of machine automation slowly replacing human labor, which may explicitly reveal the fact that bigger and complex machines are more useful and expedient[这个词，不知道对不对] than simple ones.

From the analysis made above, I commit to[这个词应该改下，比如think, admit之类] the optimal approach that we need to seek[用strike更地道] a balance and take an all-sided consideration.闪光句~ Without simple and small methods we may feel fragmented when dealing with convoluted problems. Without complex and difficult approaches we cannot thrive on the road ahead. Therefore, we shall make our decisions according to different conditions and circumstances.
我发现我有很多词不认识啊。。。所以有些词的用法我没办法改了额~
可能例证太少是最大的缺陷。还有finally那段的分论点没有在首段提出。
