TOPIC: ISSUE85 - "Government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts."
WORDS: 641
TIME: 0:45:00
DATE: 2010-3-18
Whether the government funding of arts does harm to the art's integrity? In my perspective, though it on the one hand does damage to the integrity of art, yet on the other hand, art's development cannot be achieved without the assistance from government.
Firstly, when talking about this issue, we should get the clear definition about art's integrity. In my point, I convince the word integrity here mainly refers to two points, at first, it means the diversity and flourishing of arts, and besides, it also means the independence of arts. And we then should further inspect the practical influence that how does the government funding has on these two aspects.
Admittedly, where there is sufficient money, where there is success. When looking back to our history, almost all fields have enjoyed amazing development based on sufficient funding or investment, from the thriving of a party to the booming of an enterprise. Art, as a crucial constitute of people’ life, is going the similar way. With enough government funding, the art will have more chances to hold appealing shows which will do much effect on the masses and attract people's eyes and interests, bigger the scope of its influence. What is more, based on the government support, the working environment for those artists will become better, which do help their creative activity and then hence the development of art. Besides, if the kind of art grows more and more popular and the working conditions become better, without any doubt, there will be more students who want to devote themselves into the cause of art, which will assure the continuity and further development of art. So we can see, with more government funding, art will have more chance to develop and then be flourishing.
However, there are also some deflects lying which cannot be ignored. At first, government funding may in some sense do harm to the independence of art. Since, when there is the supply of money, despite concerning of art creativity, artists should also pay attention to the need and demand of funding bodies, to whom they ask for support and money aid. In this way, the creative process of art is no more pure, and those non art factors do demine the creativity and art value of the art itself. What is more, as to the government funding is so limited that it will be impossible to be averagely distributed on each area of art. As a result, the diversity of art might also be diluted. Because when every artist wants to be sponsored by the government, the possible result will be only the kind of art which the government embraces enjoys development, while many others are abandoned or at least put on the back burner. Such behaviors will do really much damage to both the balance of art and the diversity of art. And I think, the Chinese Opera can just serve to illustrate this point well. Since 100 years ago, from Qing Dynasty, the Pecking Opera has been enjoyed more preference by authority, and this phenomenon drives to the current situation as the result that Pecking Opera has been booming for decades, even enjoyed great popularity overseas. However, other provincial operas are now in the dangerous edge of distinction. So we can see, sometimes, the government funding and support will definitely lead to great damage to the art diversity.
To sum up, though in a sense, the government funding provides encouragement and money foundations as well to the development of art, however, it also does damage to the independence of art. What is worse, with government funding, both the diversity and the balance of art are also facing great challenge. So government should take reconsideration when deciding to provide funding to some certain art areas, trying to strike a balance between both the development of art and the diversity of art. At the same time, show more respect to art freedom to keep the healthy improvement of art.
