TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 617          TIME: 01:00:05          DATE: 2010-7-28 21:41:57

Does the way people look, dress, and act serve to be mirror that reflects the society’s ideas and values as the speaker claims? I fundamentally agree with this assertion. Because common people tend to dress clothes which are favored by the society's vision of aesthetics and to do things which accord with the society's current trend.

To begin with, when we mention the way people look and dress, the society’s criteria of aesthetics come to mind immediately.Clothes, especially female dress reflect different vision of aesthetics significantly. For instances, French women tend to dress long and slim skirts with delicate laces, which reveal the French people's preference to elegance; Chinese people prefer clothes with red colors, which stand for 'luck ' in Chinese culture; African people like to wear colorful clothes, which reveal that African love vivid things.

However, dress and clothes not only reflect the vision of aesthetics of the society, but also tell us that where the society's value lies. In China, it is no uncommon to see that young people prefer to dress like those characters appeared in the Western Movies. This tells us that the trend of westernization is becoming more and more intensive in China. In Japan, we can see elegant female dressing in traditional clothes working in the skyscrapers or shopping in supermarkets. These scenarios are beautiful because they successful complement traditional culture with modern culture. And these scenarios also reveal that Japanese place high value on traditional culture. However, things go to be a bit strange when we turn to North Korea. Through valuable video material, we can observe that almost all people dress in same uniforms. It is not to say that all North Korean people do not like to show their personal preference and characteristic. What miserable is the oppressed society deprives people's chance to show themselves. The leader of North Korea trys to unify people's ideology as well as their dressing habits. Despite those politics factors, we can see that North Korea place little value on cultural diversity and individual freedom.

Acts, no like dress and clothes, are supposed to reflect the society's ideas and values more directly given the possibilities that sometimes people's dressing habits may be bred by necessities for work and adaption for environment rather than any other social values. People living in Eastern Asia are fascinated with properties. Most of them regard a house or a department as a requisite of marriage. And they tend to judge a people's capability by his/her properties. In America, people prefer to rent house rather than to buy one. And Americans like to spend more than they earn while Asians would not buy the thing they want until they save enough money. Why there exists such a difference? American's optimism and Asian's practicality and even pessimism might explain such difference as well as huge gap in social welfare. Asian people think a property means that he/she can spend the rest of his/her life safely given the insignificant social welfare compared to western countries. And Asian people consider overconsuming is a risky behavior. According to Asian social value, people place high value on humble and awareness of danger. Conversely, Americans treasure the spirit of America, that is, to be positive and optimistic, to strive for success. They do not think overconsuming is risky because they share a belief that a people can be successful and earn much money as long as he/she work hard.

To sum up, the speaker is fundamentally correct.
The way people look and dress reflects society's vision of aesthetic and value. However, we can discovery more things from people's behaviors considering the fact the dressing habits may be affected by privy concerns.
