“Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress”
The speaker claims that mistakes are the unavoidable experience on our way to discovery or progress. Just like the old Chinese saying, ”failure is the mother of achievement”. But is it true that mistake is the ONLY way to discovery and progress? I don’t think so.
Admittedly, in some cases it is the mistakes that lead to the ultimate discovery or progress. The most typical example is Galileo’s famous experiment took on the Leaning Tower Of Pisa. Before Galileo, people had been admitting Aristotle’s point that the heavier an object was, the faster it fell down to the ground. But Galileo didn’t think so. He believed that the velocity of an object falling to the ground had no business to do with the weight. And he did the experiment on the tower to prove his point of view. Thus a new discovery of “这里不知道怎么说,就是关于自由落体的” was born through the mistake made by Aristotle.
But when it comes to the word “only”, things become too absolute. Mistakes do lead to discovery or progress, but a great deal of other situations can also make progress, for example, an inspiration aroused by an unexpected phenomenon or a clear destination, careful study and precise calculation can make great discovery and progress too.
Doubtlessly, inspiration is a key element to discovery. Maybe you have been thinking about a problem for quite a long time but achieved nothing, and then accidentally, some ordinary matter that happened every day appears, which lighted your inspiration showing you the way to the right solution. Watt’s kettle, Newton’s apple and the invention of microwave oven are all this kind of discovery. And I also have the similar experiences. When I was in junior middle school, I was once pondering over a very hard geometry problem for a whole day but reached no progress at all. Then during the night when I was sleeping, the right solution just came into my dream! I jumped up and wrote it down. So, you can see that actually inspiration is a way to progress too.
Another approach to discovery and progress is thorough and detailed plans. For example, the designing, engineering and launching of a rocket permits no mistake – one mistake may lead to the loss of several lives, let alone a good deal of money. Thus careful preparing work is of great importance in such cases like detailed plans, precise calculation and the solutions to any occasion unexpected to happen.(以上这句话自己也觉得不顺,但不知道怎么改) Another example is the invention of atomic bomb. There can’t be any large –scale experiment for this kind of dangerous thing; the experiment have to be taken in the deep desert and the dweller even living far away from it should be warned beforehand for the radiation really threatens. It is indeed an effort-taking job. The whole process also permits no mistakes. But the success of developing an atomic bomb is a huge progress in human history.
To sum up, it is true that mistakes can bring discovery and progress to us, but to say only mistakes can do it for us appears one-sided. As I said, there’re other occasions that help us stepping forward – a slight flash that light up the flame of our thought, or the hard work behind those accurate numbers of engineering. That is to say, we should change this sentence into: “through mistakes…” or “not only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.” |
