题目：ARGUMENT203 - The following appeared in a newspaper feature story.

"At the small, nonprofit hospital in the town of Saluda, the average length of a patient's stay is two days; at the large, for-profit hospital in the nearby city of Megaville, the average patient stay is six days. Also, the cure rate among patients in the Saluda hospital is about twice that of the Megaville hospital. The Saluda hospital has more employees per patient than the hospital in Megaville, and there are few complaints about service at the local hospital. Such data indicate that treatment in smaller, nonprofit hospitals is more economical and of better quality than treatment in larger, for-profit hospitals."

The argument is well-presented; however, the author fails to recognize all the elements necessary to evaluate his situation. The author asserts that with less days of stay in hospital, higher cure rate and lower rate of complain, nonprofit hospitals are more economical and of better quality than treatment in large, for-profit hospital seems logical.

However, the time length of a patient's stay is not a good indication of quality of treatment in the hospital. Other factors might also explain the shorter length of patient stay and higher cure rate in the Saluda hospital. It is possible that there are plenty of patients with flu or other tiny illness in Saluda hospital, and on the contrary, there are a hundred and a half patients with sports damage in Megaville hospital. If so, the patient with sports damage might spend longer time on staying hospital than patient with tiny flu in Saluda hospital. If author does not show the evidence that all patients got the same illness in both hospital, the conclusion is completely unwarranted.

Another important thing to consider is that we do not know the kind of illness among patients in Saluda hospital and in Megaville hospital, thus cannot evaluate the cure rate in the two hospitals. It is possible that Megaville hospital is a polyclinic and they usually do surgery operation and it is dangerous with high rate of loss. But Saluda hospital might is a sports specialized hospital with a lot of experienced specialist, and their treatment is mature with lower rate of loss. If the author fails to recognize the kind of illness the two hospitals mainly cure, all conclusion is indefensible.

Finally, it is important to remember that more employees per patents and few complains do not necessarily indicate that treatment in Saluda hospital is better than in Megaville hospital. It is possible that the patient in Saluda hospital is too weak to complain anything at all and the reason why there are high rate in Megaville hospital may be the time stay in hospital is so long that they complain with upset and anxiety mood. Maybe the food in Megaville is not delicious, but the entire guesses I express above may not indicate that treatment in Saluda hospital is better than Megaville hospital.

To sum up, the argument, while it seems logical at first, has several flaws discussed above. The argument could not be improved by providing evidence that all patients' condition and the location of two hospitals is completely the same.
