TPO18 Integrated writing
The lecture refutes the passage completely. The reading statesthat there are three possible ways to safe the endangered specie Torreya.However, the professor's lecture casts doubts on the reading by giving detailedexamples about the flaws of the three solutions.
The first doubt is that reestablishing Torreya in the samelocation will not be work because those areas in which it originated haschanged a lot. Due to the global warming and some other reasons, the areas havebecome drier so only the original areas are suitable for Torreya to survive. Incontrast, the passage states that idea that to reestablish Torreya will bework.
Another key point made by the professor is that moving Torreyato a new area may bring unpredictable outcomes, which will endanger otherspecies in that place. She cites an experiment to prove this point. Oncescientists moved a kind of tree to a new area but this tree spread so fast thatit harmed the other trees' living environment. So she argues that the attemptto change ecosystem is very risky and it can result in some bad outcomes.Instead, the reading material mentioned that through the process know asassisted migration, humans could help Torreya to move to a new environment. Andthere have already been some successful experiments. Obviously, these twopointes, if compared, are whole against each other.
Moreover, the professor also rebuts that preserving Torreya inresearch center is definitely not a wise choice because if so, there chancethat Torreya will die of diseases is going to increase. She mentioned that thelarge, diverse population of Torreya can prevent them from suffering too muchfrom various diseases in the wild place. If people keep Torreya only inresearch center, this tree will not possess diversity of population, thus it schance to survive disease will decrease in the long term. This opinion iscontradictory to the passage as well.
In conclusion, the doubt casted above demonstrate that thereading's opinion that there are three solutions to save the Torreya issuspicious for us to believe according to the lecture.

TPO 17 Integrated Writing
The reading states that the population of birds in the United Stateshas been decreased and this trend will continue. However, the professor'slecture casts doubt on the reading by giving detailed explanation and examplesabout the current situation in the U.S.
The first doubt is that human activities and the boom of urbanareas are no harmful to all the birds. Some kinds of bird's amount, such ashawk, falcon and sea gull have increased because of larger living areas andmore preys. So human being's settlement is not the reason that causes thedeclination of birds. In contrast, the passage holds that human's activitieshave bad effects on birds' natural habitats so the size of birds' populationdecreased.
Another key point brought up by the professor is that theagricultural land doesn't lead to the destruction of bird habitats as there isno need for human to enlarge the size of agricultural land. With theimprovement of technology, more and more highly productive crops are put intopractice, so people don't have to grow that much crops to meet the demand fromthe booming population. Instead, the reading material mentioned the growth ofagriculture causes further destruction of bird habitats.
Additionally, the professor argues that nowadays, with thediscovery of pest-persisted crops, people don't use as much chemical pesticidesas before. And there is no doubt that the pest-persisted crops will not harmbirds. The professor's opinion is contradictory to the passage.
In conclusion, the doubt casted above demonstrate that thereading's opinion that it is the growth of human population and the factorsrelated that lead to the declination of birds' population is suspicious for usto believe according to the lecture of the professor.
