The reading passage talks about the advantages of salvage logging. The professor’s lecture deals with the same issue. However, she thinks that salvage logging does more harm than good to the environment and the economy, which contradicts what the reading state.

First, even though the reading suggests that salvage logging offers spaces for new trees to grow, the professor argues in the lecture that removing those destroyed trees does not necessarily lead to the growth of new trees. And the decomposition of destroyed trees is able to enrich the environment. Therefore, if those trees are removed, new trees will have less opportunity to survive due to the lacks of nutrition. Obviously, the professor’s argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.

Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that salvage logging could prevent the growth of insects; the professor believes that not all insects are harmful to the forest. The decaying wood could also provide food with many birds and good insects, which could benefit the recovery of the forest.

Eventually, the author of the reading claims that salvage logging have good effect on economy. The professor proves that this claim is weak by pointing out that since the salvage logging doesn’t exist frequently, the jobs created are just temporary and cannot last long. Besides, the process of those woods is difficult and thus expensive. Therefore, salvage logging cannot provide jobs with local workers as it requires workers with great experiences.
