The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at HongKong UST is recruiting PhD students to start in Fall 2011. We are looking foroutstanding undergraduate students as well as outstanding graduate studentswith Masters degree with some research experience. We are looking forpostgraduate students in all areas in computer science and related areas,including but not limited to, artificial intelligence, data and knowledgemanagement, networks and networking systems, software technologies, theoreticalcomputer science and vision and graphics. We also encourage students interestedin multi-disciplinary areas such as bioinformatics, risk management andbusiness intelligence and computational finance. Our department consists of outstanding faculty members andgraduate students with over 40 faculty members and over 100 PhD students. Ourmedium of teaching and research is English. Besides having a strong publicationtrack record, our faculty and students are among the first to develop advancedand popular P2P systems, industry standards on RFID and sensor networks,computer graphics and vision systems, large-scale data mining and machinelearning systems for Web search, GPU and parallel computing for database queryprocessing, to name a few. After getting their PhDs, our students find jobs inworldwide research labs such as Microsoft Research, Google, IBM and topuniversities in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. A student who hasa master’s degree is expected to graduate with a PhD in 3-5 years, and anundergraduate degree to graduate in 5-7 years.
Starting in 2010, we are particularly happy to offer theprestigious Hong Kong PHD Fellowship of HK$20,000 (~USD 2,580) per month, plusa travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~USD 1,290) for three years with a limitedquota. Exceptionally qualified PhD applicants (top 10% in class, >85% GPA,excellent English command) are welcome to contact potential faculty supervisorsand the HKPFS 2011/12 will call for applications in September 2010.Please visitHKPFS website (http://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html) for details. Thisfellowship award is offered centrally by University Grant Council of Hong Kong.
We also offer a large number of postgraduate researchstudentship awards at HK$156,000 per year (~USD 20,000/year). Our admissionrequirement for English is one of recent TOEFL(cbt)>=580, IELTS>=7, orTOEFL(ibt)>=92 by the time you enter HKUST. Tuition fee at HKUST is aroundHK$42,100 per year.
We are recruiting in two phases. Our first phase, which hasalready started, is an early recruiting session which is targeted for PhDapplicants through telephone or onsite interviews.
