Notable as important nineteenth-century novels by women, Marry Shelley’s Frankenstein and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights treat women very differently. Shelley’s produced a “masculine” text in which the fates of subordinate female characters seem entirely dependent on the actions of male heroes or anti-heroes. Bronte produced a more realistic narrative portraying a world where men battle for the favors of apparently high-spirited, independent women. Nevertheless, these two novels are alike in several crucial ways. Many readers are convinced that the compelling mysteries of each plot conceal elaborate structures of allusion and fierce, though shadowy, moral ambitions that seem to indicate metaphysical intensions, though effort by critics to articulate these intensions have generated much controversy. Both novels are use a storytelling method that emphasizes ironic disjunctions between different perspectives on the same events as well as ironic tensions that inhere in the relationship between surface drama and concealed authorial intention, a method I call an evidentiary narrative technique.

The primary purpose of the passage is to

答案给的是E，看完解析之后还是不大能理解。
自己一开始选的是D，“compare and contrast two novels”比较了两部小说的相同之处和不同之处，感觉和文章行文思路比较贴切：1. ...very differently... ；2. Nevertheless...are alike...

请大家帮忙帮忙看下问题出在哪里？

考满分上的答案也是D。我认为答案是compare&contrast的原因是全文始终在将两本书进行比较，先是说两本书treat women very differently，再是alike in several crucial ways。
另一方面，如果是criticize&evaluate的话，跟主体的意思也比较贴合，因为全文就是分析和评论这两本书，所以也不是完全没有道理。
吴中东有可能认为compare只谈到了文章的结构，criticize的话才跟文章的意思有关，所以选E

诶, 我倒是觉得这篇文章重点部分是 Nonetheless 后面的部分, 反而有点 evaluate 的感觉, 讲的都是 evidentiary narrative technique 这个东西?
可是翻了一下 GRE 资料大全答案是 D... 有人能解释一下吗?

我也选D，不过后来觉得constrast一词可能跟更强调两篇著作的差异，而本文更多侧重于两篇著作的共同点。

compare也有表达类比相同之处的意思（To compare is to look at two things and see how they are similar and different.），感觉D选项：compare and contrast是比较了相同和不同之处，包含了这层意思，现在比较倾向是吴中东答案错了
