The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
不同意， case-by-case study.
人们的思想认识水平可能达不到某一个程度，所以对于物理定律就不能完全认识其伟大性。

Can individuals' greatness only be recognized by retrospect as the assertion claims? While in most cases, judging the greatness of individuals with historical perspective could be of great help, there are indeed a lot of greatness that had been recognized by their contemporaries. So it should better be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Some of the legitimacy of achievements could only be judged by their descendents, because the validation of it is beyond their contemporaries' ability. The examples are replete in favor of this argument. In the history of physics, there exist two theories, the wave theory and quantum theory; they contradict to each other. Recent years, some theorists have brought forward a new "string" theory which is compromise with the both two theories. However there is no evidence to demonstrate this theory, so whether we could adopt this theory had better leave to those who live after us with more knowledge and advanced technology.

Under some circumstances, the consequences of some decisions need a long time to be revealed. Cybernetics theory tells us that the feedback of some operation require some time delay, the more complex of the object, the longer the time of delay requires. The project of Aswan Dam in Egypt serves a good illustration. In order to control the flood water in the Nile delta, the Egyptian government decided to build a huge dam. After the completion of Aswan Dam, there were obvious effects on the flood control. Nevertheless, the natural balance in the Nile delta had been destroyed: the farmland in Nile delta was depleted with the nutrition and the nature resource of fishery was decreased because of the new dam. So the greatness of this dam is offset by its side-effect on local environment.

The criteria in one field may shift through the progress of human society. With the development of the recognition ability of humans, the aesthetic criteria are changing. As a consequence, especially in the art field, the greatness may not be discovered by the contemporaries. There are many examples serve as the illustrations. In the early years of Renaissance, there emerged many art works that could not be comprehended by public, which were considered as great work later. Even the most famous authors Shakespeare had been severely rejected by the Voltaire because his work was not conformed to the neo-classical.

On the other hand, it is too presumptuous to claim that all greatness of individuals can only be decided by those who live after them. There are some individuals, whose affirmative accomplishments are quickly recognized by the contemporaries. In the political field, the formal president Franklin in the period of great depression was considered as a successful leader because his policy of macro-control on the eco-system helped to lift the American economy out of the doldrums of depression. In the business field, Henry Ford's assemble-line to approach to manufacture affordable cars to masses was quickly considered as an innovation not only in the car industry but all manufacturing field.

In sum, the people who live afterwards have more information, advanced technology and the entire view of the achievement of an individual, so it is easy and subjective for them to judge the greatness of the individuals. However, this claim should be better based on a case-by-case study.
