Issue243: 544 words 60 minutes
The true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments.
1、 艺术创作可以反映true value of a civilization
2、 科学成就也可以反映true value of a civilization
3、 有时二者结合在一起共同反映true value of a civilization
Does the true value of a civilization merely lie in its artistic creations? As far as I am concerned, I would like to support the opinion that the true value of civilization is not just limited in artistic creations, it can also be reflected in the scientific accomplishments.
On the one hand, the true value of a civilization, which is generally regarded as the original achievements of human beings in all respects, can be expressed by the artistic creations. The artistic creations perhaps can be defined as what people want to convey about their emotions and imaginations, and the ideas and thoughts of the relationship between the nature and human beings. Thus it can be well understood that the arts, from the sculptures of ancient Egypt to the old Chinese book <Dream of the red chamber>, are considered as the records of the evolving process of the human's spiritual world through thousands of years of human' civilization. Hence, the arts, including music, dance and literature, reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, and through it we can have a good acknowledgement of the true value of the civilization.
On the other hand, the artistic creations can not represent the whole values of a civilization, as they are only part of the achievement accomplished by humans in the spiritual fields. The scientific accomplishments are also indispensable elements in the civilization of human beings. Our predecessors in ancient times seems helpless facing power of nature and suffered a lot, Nevertheless, with the highly developed contemporary science and technology, we have lead a much more convenient and enjoyable lives than ever before. For instance, the scientific accomplishments have brought us many innovations that changed and even revolutionized the way we transport and communication. The plane can take us from one side of the earth to the other side in several hours, while it may be several years before. The Internet, telephone, and Television are able to inform us what is happening in every corner of the world simultaneously. As these significant material achievements caused by improved science and technology have created a suitable environment for human beings, definitely it can be regarded as the true value of the civilization.
Furthermore, the scientific accomplishments have an ineluctable overlap with the artistic creations. Especially when the high-tech methods are introduced, the traditional artistic expression forms often become more creative and vigorous, such as CG (Computer Graphic), MTV (Music Television) and virtual museum (Exhibition created on Internet using virtual reality technology). As a result, the scientific accomplishments and artistic creations sometimes are difficult to separate them from each other, for example, many computer games are perfect combinations of computer science and aesthetics. And they should not be treated respectively to weight out which one reflects more of civilization. Thus if merely focus on a unilateral part, we may fail to realize the true value of the civilization in a full picture.
To sum up, it may be unfair to assert that the true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments, because both artistic creations and scientific accomplishments are the creative endeavors of humans, which I think is the true value of a civilization, but just finished in different domains. |
