Issue 103
The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.

History is a treasure case of experience and wisdom of our forefathers. We can benefit so much form it that it will be too narrow and limited to focus the value of studying history on people's daily lives. The study of history can also shed lights on personal inspiration, culture succession, and guidance of the future.

In school education, the study of history can provide student inspiration and courage. By learning the stories of great individuals in history, student may inspired by the wisdom and tenacity of the heroes and may choose careers just like them, and they also will resort to the stories of heroes for courage and strength in facing of difficulties. Take one of my friends for example, he started his career in law business inspired by the story of Abraham Lincoln, who became a lawyer by diligence and tenacity. This friend of my was touched by the characteristics of Lincoln and decided to be a man like him. He encouraged himself every time he failed in the LSAT: would Lincoln succeeded if he gave up? And he finally became lawyer just as he wanted. This illustrate that by studying the great individuals in history students can make these heroes idols and goals of future, and when students are in the adversity they can seek for strength and courage from these idols.

Study of history can also help transfer culture and tell people whom they are. In the era of culture impact and amalgamation, people can easily stray in the river of time and forget whom they are. Recent years in china, the younger generation is quite different from their fathers. They celebrate Christmas, eat McDonald’s and KFC, dye their hair into different colors, and speak better English than Chinese. These people may ask: who are we? By studying history they will know that their traditional holiday is Spring festival, their traditional food is dumpling, they are Chinese with black eyes, black hairs and yellow skin. Without learning history they may confused by different cultures that have entered their lives, and some day these people may entirely forget their traditional values and accept other value form different cultures, then the culture of a nation may vanished.

Another important value of studying history is people can learn from the mistakes that our ancestors made so that we will not make the same mistakes today. If we can go back in time, we can stop numerous mistakes that people made, but we cannot, so the only thing we can do today is to learn experience and lesions of the past, and to avoid making them again. Open the book of history, the disasters involving nuclear power are startling: the nuclear bombs used in the second world war, the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear-power plant, the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear-power plant in the Soviet Union, all these striking truth from history are telling people that human are not ready for the nuclear technology, and be careful while using it. Hopefully if we can learn the lessons that history has taught us, the same disasters will never happen again.

To sum up, the study of history do not only has values in our daily lives, but also benefit in cultivating the young, passing down traditions and culture, and helping make dicisions to avoide mistakes that has been made in the history.
