Argument140: 398 words   30 minutes  
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'

    In the argument above comes to a suggestion that Elm City University (ECU) should give a $10,000 raise to Professor Thomas, or she maybe leave ECU for another college. However, the arguer do not well reasoned his or her demonstration. In fact, this conclusion the arguer made is non sequitur and there is a problematic assumption in this argument.

    In the first place, to show Professor Thomas is well worth her annual salary of $50,000, the arguer point out that Professor Thomas’ classes are among the largest at the university, and comes to a conclusion that it demonstrating Professor Thomas' popularity among students. However, it is unconvincing. Although her classes are among the largest at the university, the may not means that many students choose her class. Maybe the classes taught by her is necessary classes of some majors, and only she teach these classes, so students have no other choice but to choose her class.(大班不一定表明她受欢迎,可能是因为她教必修课)

    In the second place, to strengthen that Professor Thomas well worth her annual salary, the arguer points out that in each of the last two years, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary. Whereas we notice that Professor Thomas has been teaching in ECU for seventeen years, only in each of the last two years she brought money to the university exceeded her annual salary, which makes us doubt that is she worth her annual salary now? Should we even raise her salary for $10,000? Moreover, she brought this money to the university, but there is no data shows whether this money covers her cost in research. Possibly this money is not enough and she get more money from school for her research.(她教了17年书,但是只提到过去两年带来比她年薪高的经费, 她是否真的值得加 工资?而且没提到加多少,也没说这些经费够不够,可能她还向学校要呢)

    At last, the arguer fears that she might leave ECU for another college for reason of the unsatisfied salary, but there is no any clue suggests that. There is no sign that Professor Thomas is no satisfied with her present salary. Even she thinks that she deserves higher salary, it do not necessarily means the Professor will leave her present job for another one, whose salary may not be higher.(没提到她不满意目前薪金,也没有说有其他学校要出更高价钱请她,试问她要走到哪里?)

   To sum up, the evidence cited in the argument is unconvincing and probably misleading, as discuss above, thus does not lead strong support the suggestion that the arguer maintains. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer should provide more relative evidence.
