In my opinion, the artist actually plays a more important role in giving the society lasting value compared with the critics. At the same time, the importance of the latter can not be neglected, and it's the combination of the two that leads to the lasting value.
Lasting value, in my view, is the inherent attributes, which can be an attitude, a point of view, or even just beauty, of a masterpiece which can benefit the multitude for rather a long time. The reason that some of the music, novels, paintings, and films are of lasting value is that they reflect the society environment, disclose the author's good personalities such as determinant, modest, and brave etc, or give insight to the human nature. All of them have the inherent attributes, from which the people can learn much to either handle the common affairs in life or gain a positive world view.
According to what I have defined for the lasting value, we can easily conclude that the artist contributes more to it for two reasons. First of all, the artist creates the works with originality while the critic performs their evaluation on the artist's works. Although the originality is not sufficient for the lasting value since not every original creation can be considered to be good, it is a necessary condition. Imitating or plagiarism is of little meaning, not to mention lasting value. On the contrary, some artists use their wisdom and imagination, incorporated their own experience, to bring about a piece of artistic work. As a result, the inherent attributes of lasting value are attributable to the artist. The second reason is that the various comprehensions of the artist’s works by different people result in diverse inherent attributes, since artist expresses their ideas in the works without explicitly stated them. Nonetheless, the critic conveys personal view by plain words for the purpose of clear understanding which leads to single inherent attributes. Take the music for instance, the layman might benefit from the dulcet melody, while an experienced musician might be startle at the method of creation, and when it comes to a critic, perhaps he is deeply moved by the sad mood in the music. Hence it is only the artist himself can interpret the true meaning of his works. For the above two reasons, the lasting value of the works are dominant by the artists.
Although I concede the great importance of the artist, the function of critics can not be neglected. The artists express their ideas in different methods such as painting, music, literature, or film, but it is the critics who use the words to express their opinion on the artist's works, which make the works understandable for the common peoples. There is no doubt that not everyone can understand the masterpieces. The critics can help the reader to perceive it by interpreting them into concise and accurate language. There is a common phenomenon that many artists can not be recognized in their age; only when the critics discover the merits of their works can they be regard as the preeminent artists. The great musician Beethoven, who died of misery and poverty, is a good example. Therefore, the critics bridge the reader common people and the artists.
To conclude, although the artist is proven to be more important in giving the society lasting value in comparison to the critics, both the artist and critic are indispensable to the lasting value. |
