Should an effective leader maintain the highest ethical and moral standards? The answer to the issue is complex because there are many types of leadership in our society and each one has its own standards of successful leaders. However, it is helpful to analyze the issue by discussing two distinct forms of leadership: business and political.
A prevailing view of successful business leadership is that business leaders should achieve profits maximization for their companies' shareholders. This assertion tends to encourage business leaders to make greatest benefits while overlooking the harm their businesses caused to the society and environment. On the contrary, some objectors of the view suggest that successful business leaders should afford some obligation to protect natural environment, improve qualities of their workers' life, reduce unemployment and promote economy of the community. The suggestion seems to put so many burdens on the companies which would increase the costs of these firms. However, in my opinion, successful leaders could strike a balance between maximizing their benefits and fulfilling their basic obligation to the society and environment. The basic obligation is the one that companies should minimize the harm caused by them to society and environment. For instance, factories should adopt new technology to reduce pollution to river and air and mainly use recycled material. Although these steps might increase costs of companies, the reputation of companies will rise in the long term as a result that these companies fulfill the fundamental obligation to the society.
In the political field, definitions of effective leadership and of ethical or moral leadership are closely related in the measures leaders use to wield their power and obtain that power. It is a good way to draw a difference between personal morality and public morality. As we all know, President Clinton has ever got into trouble with his female secretary about their relationship. Although this is against with standards of personal morality, no one would deny that he is an effective political leader who has made a great contribution to the prosperity of America in the 1990's. Therefore, personal morality affects little to the political leadership. Nevertheless, a successful leader always has high standards of public morality, such as President Roosevelt. When he was elected to be the president, it was just the Depression in America. He implemented New Policy which mainly helps those unemployment workers in terms of his public morality to solve economic problems and render the America flourishing again. The political power can only be wielded to serve for the public by political leaders. Otherwise, the leaders who ignore the rights of the pubic or even do intentional harm to the pubic would be forfeited of political power ultimately.
Overall, the standards of effective business leadership and political leadership are distinct. Effective business leaders should achieve the greatest benefits for their firms and at same time, concern about protecting the profits of society. Nonetheless, in the political realm, people would admire and elect those political leaders who maintain high standards of public morality.
