题目:ARGUMENT236 - The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a local Solano newspaper.

"The Solano school district should do away with its music education programs. After all, music programs are not especially popular in our schools: only 20 percent of our high school students participated in music programs last year. Furthermore, very few of the Solano district's college-bound students are interested in majoring in music at the university level. Also, when the school district of our neighboring town of Rutherford eliminated its music programs two years ago, the overall grade point average in the high school increased by 10 percent the next year. Surely the money spent on Solano music programs could be better used to improve the quality of traditional academic courses."

Should music education programs exist in the school? By pointing out the fact that in our neighboring town of Rutherford, school eliminated its music programs and therefore the overall grade point average increased, the author suggest that we'd better do so to save money for other use. The first glance of the suggestion seems reasonable.

However, is the music education program really useless for our students? First reason provided for this by the author is that it is not popular in our school, for statistics illustrates that only 20 percent of our students participate in the program. We may ask that: how many different programs are provided by the school? As round development is expected in school by public, there might be varieties of different programs that involve nearly all the subjects, including science, computer, and sports and so on. When one in five students choose music programs, it is unfair to easily judge that the number is small. A comparison is lost here, which is of equal chance to show the programs popular.

The other reason is that few college-bound students in Solano district are interested in majoring in music at the university level. It is the author's implication that a failure of music programs in schools is to account for this situation. However, it may not be like this at all. It seems more direct a factor that encourage students to choose a non-musical major if Solano's colleges are mainly studying science and technology, and cannot provided a college education in music good enough to attract students. Even it is possible that no major about music are open to students in Solano district. How can we expect our science major college students to be more interested in music?

Things may be completely different in Rutherford, where higher level of music education in their universities may attract more students to go there. To avoid an overemphasis on music than other science subjects may lie for the motivation of their act of eliminating music program and adding others. In this case, it is not so wise to simply copy the system and to expect that we will achieve a similar success.

Overall, the suggestion is seemingly proper at first but its rationality is reduced by these logical flaws. We cannot easily jump to the conclusion provided by the author. Further consideration is needed before that.
