The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.

"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In this memo, the business manager suggests all Valu-Mart stores should increase the stock of home office machines and office supplies, and as a result, their office-supply department will become the most profitable component of their stores. The suggestion is based on a result of a recent survey which reports employees are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than before. At first glance, the memo do seems reasonable, yet, after a close analysis, I find it suffers from several logical flaws.

The threshold problem of the memo do with the precondition that over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. The business manager shows us no information about the respondents such as their career, age, gender, and so forth. We also know nothing about how many people were involved in this survey and where did this survey conducted. Perhaps the number of the participants is too small and the survey is not typical. Or perhaps the survey is conducted in a small region and it cannot represent the trend in other districts. Without ruling out all these possibilities, the business manager cannot make his or her suggestion persuasive.

Secondly, even if there is a certain work-at-home trend, it does not mean the need for home office machines and office supplies will definitely increase. It is entirely possible that the employees only bring the document home to study and analyze, which does not need any home office machines and office supplies as printers or paper shredders. Without a further market research, the business manager reaches this conclusion too hasty.

Finally, the business manager overlooks the complex factors of profits, which refer to the costs and the incomes, he or she unwarrantedly asserts that with these changes, their office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of their stores. Even if as a result of the suggestion, the sales of home office machines and office supplies increase, it does not mean the profits will increase sharply, not to mention becoming the most profitable component. In addition, the business manager should not apply one policy to all Valu-Mart stores, as we all know that there is no panacea.

In sum, the suggestion is this memo is unconvincing. In order to make it reasonable, the business manager should provides more information about the survey which he or she cites as a precondition. To bolster it, maybe a further market research should be conducted to find out the real need of the employees. Besides, the business manager should analyze the costs and sales carefully to reach the conclusion on how the profits will be.
