"Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress

On the way to achievements, discovery or self-improvement, we are usually accompanied by mistakes. Some ignore these mistakes, continuing to move forward in the wrong direction. Some fear them, giving up initiatives and letting mistakes control themselves. Wise people, however, take advantage of these mistakes, treating mistakes rationally and learning from them. To have the right attitude towards mistakes, one should understand that discovery or progress are usually made by overcoming, analyzing and learning from mistakes. However, this does not give justification for every mistake, especially the mistakes caused by our own carelessness, laziness.

Mistakes are valuable because they might reveal the problems we have and suggest correct solutions. In the lab, we often come to a point where several approaches are available for an experiment yet none of them could guarantee success. Taking one of the approaches and committing a mistake could at least rule that one out. In more complicated scenarios, a mistake, or a major failure could help raise some problems that are originally overlooked. A recent crisis my uncle's small company endured could offer a good support. Initially, everything is fine in that company, from procurement, manufacturing,to sales and internal financial control. However, a large group of employees suddenly decided to resign one day and put the company into a very bad situation of severe shortage of manpower. Employees' resentment had been rising and it was a huge mistake that the resentment was not reported to and addressed by the management. Realizing that, new lines of communication was built between the employees and the management and productivity, as a result, was improved.

People held back by the fear of mistake stand little chance for progress. The new areas we explore, the matters we study are usually complicated, but our ability to explore and learn is confined by many objective limitations: limited information, inaccuracy of tools we use and etc. It is just normal these limitations bring us many mistakes and there is no need for self resentment which could possibly hurt our morale. If we are prevented by these mistake from trying, we can never get a chance to move forward, let alone to make a progress.

Even though mistakes are quite normal, we can not use that as an excuse for our own carelessness or laziness. First, as I previously mentioned mistakes caused by objective limitations are just normal and somewhat ineluctable. The mistakes stemming from our carelessness andlaziness, however, do not fall in that category. When proper measuresare taken, these mistakes can be avoided. If we use that as an excuse for our underperformance, we would just hurting our efficiency and personal images. So towards mistake, we needs to treat them discriminatingly: accept those caused by objective limitations, carefully analyze them and learn from them; blame ourselves for carelessness or laziness, prevent them from happening again.

In conclusion, it is a fact that people are frequented by mistakes when striving for a discovery or a progress. The right attitudes towards mistakes should be rational and analytical.Mistakes should be taken seriously during our analysis, however, we shall never let mistake become a mental burden while moving forward.(526)
