TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Should all faculties at the college or university be needed to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, as the speaker maintains? In my opinion the speaker unfairly generalizes. In some fields, especially in the engineering, working in the professions relevant to the courses is useful and helpful for teaching. However, in other fields, particularly the theoretical mathematics and physical science, finding the suitable work related with these theories is hard and helpless for teaching. In still other fields, such as art, the use of working in professions varies from case to case.

We do not require a rear-view mirror to recognize working in engineering professions--whether in electric, industry, or computer science---is great useful and helpful for teaching related courses at collage or university. The reason for this is simple: working experience can make the course more activity. In many course, such as the courses related about engineering, the professor always introduce the abstract theory and equations, and sometimes they use nearly one class to explain or solute a complex conception and function. And the students, chosen these classes, find they only remember a few complex conceptions and functions which they do not know how to use in the end. If the professor illustrate these conceptions and equations though practical case, happened in the real world, or working experience, their students would find the practical uses from the courses and become adaptive in the society quickly. We should encourage engineering professors to work in professions relevant to the course they teach, especially some abstract courses.

By contrast, in the theoretical mathematics or physical science, it is difficult to identify great helpful for working in professions. Many mathematical or physical theories always develop in their academic world and become helpful for societal developments in a long term, and it is too abstract and hard to look for a suitable work to gain the practical useful working experience relevant to those courses. If we also require the professor in these fields to spend time working outside the academic world, in the end we would find there is few useful for improving the quality of instruction in those courses. And because the professors use too much time in the work, the quality of the course, taught by those professors, might be impacted badly.

Finally, if the teacher spends more time caring about their works outside the academic world, they might pay little attention to teaching their courses, and the quality of these courses would be effect undoubtedly. For example, there are many professors, such as in China, at the college and university open their own companies, and they are spending much time managing the companies. The students, chosen their classes, always cannot find these teachers to answer their questions in time, because these teachers work in their companies after classes. Undoubtedly if college and university want improve their courses’ quality, they should not encourage this kind of teachers to work outside the academic world.

In sum, although working outside the academic world might be helpful for improve quality in some aspects, the speaker cannot overlook other harmful aspects which appears along with the working. College or university should decide whether requires teachers to work outside or not according to the practical situation.
