117.The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.

"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In the argument, a conclusion is given that due to the trend that more people are required to have their work done at home, the company should increase their stock of both office supplies and home office machines in purpose of pursuing more profits. It seems convincing at a first glance while it commits some fallacies as follows.

First and foremost, it is questionable that there is an increasing demand of office machines. Though a survey supported the fact that a growing number of people need to complete work at home is offered, whether those people would utilize our machines is unknown. It is possible that they own enough office machines at home already and accordingly have no need to buy some more. Facts also can be that the work appointed to them does not need those office machines but simple pens and paper. If so, the plan of the company may turn out to be as a fantasy.

Second, the valid of the survey is suspectable. Lacking details on the people surveyed, we know nothing about their vocations, let alone their attitudes toward working at home. Different vocations may have different requires on the machines. It is hard to predict whether ours can meet their demand. Further more, how many people have attended the survey is unclear which is to say, though 70 percent of respondents claim such changes, it would make no sense if people who respond to the survey are rare. We expect a specific survey with data and compare to the past conditions.
Without it, to make a conclusion that our products will have an increasing market is of less cogency.

Last but not the least, the company fail to think over the issue that own a market does not necessarily mean that profits will come. They should not take for granted that people will like their products and buy them without any hastate. They should consider the possibility that competitors would not do anything but wait to lose. To win the market, it should do much more than increase the stock. Advertising their products and do more survey to find people's tastes. It is a long road to go before easily declare that they beat all their competitors and get the battle.

In sum, the arguer is too optimistic to see the survey's result, let alone it is ungrounded at all. To make more profits, there is much to do just as discussed above.
