In this newspaper feature story, the arguer concludes that smaller, nonprofit hospitals is much economical and of better quality than the treatment in lager, for-profit hospitals. To support his conclusion, the arguer points out that the average length of a patient's stay in small hospitals in Saluda is two days comparing with the six days of the patient's stay in large hospitals in Megaville. In attempt to bolster his assertion, the arguer also claims that the cure rate in the small hospital is twice more than in the big hospital in M. Additionally, the author alleges that the employee for every patient in small hospital is more and with fewer complaints compared with the big hospital. The arguer's reasons seem to be plausible on the surface, however, the conclusion relies on a series of questionable data which render it unconvincing as it stands.
First of all, the arguer compared the two hospital in two different areas. The situation in small, nonprofit hospital in the town of Saluda cannot represent the same situation of the small, nonprofit hospital in the city of Megaville. For example, the average stay in the small, nonprofit hospital in the city of Megaville may be also six days which is different with in the Saluda. Lacking clear evidence to illustrate the situation of the small hospitals in both S and M, the auger cannot convince me as the reason he gives above.
Secondly, the arguer cites the cure rate in the two hospitals to uphold the assertion that the small is of better quality. However, there exist some logic flaws. For instance, people often go to the large hospital when they get some badly ill while if they just get some normal illness they will choose the small ones. And we can infer that the cure rate of the badly ill is lower than the normal illness without doubt. In short, without more statistical evidence to show me that the cure rate of the badly ill is higher in the small hospitals, the arguer cannot bolster the assertion that the quality is better in small hospitals.
Finally, the employee for every patient is more does not mean the complaints with the service is fewer. Maybe some of the employee like the nurse are just sitting around and chatting with each other. Lacking the evidence of the employees is all working as they should do. There also exist other possibilities, such as because the hospital is nonprofit and people in the town are more likely to keep silence when treated badly for the fewer complaints. And at the same time, people in the for-profit hospital are more likely to express their complaints when they served not so kindly as they expect.
In sum, the conclusion lack credibility in that the evidence in the analysis and does not lend the strong support to what the arguer claims, at least on the data.
