In this statement, the author states that we can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people whose look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. Though values and ideas of society can be indicated by observing external phenomena of its people, much about them are exposed by deeply understanding economy and system of society.

First, sometimes laggard appearance and behavior of people can show some society's ideas and values in a angle of flank. This phenomenon would simply make people understand partial ideas and values of society. In Arab country, Moslem women, at the edge of the culture in this society because of canon which they entirely embrace, must dress with head covering, and also they can not join in activities like Olympic Games. This custom does not only limit development of women there, but indicates conservative ideas of Arab society. However, this evaluation on the social ideas and values has some localization, and can not show a essential social value.

In the modern time, with the fast economic development, values and ideas of a society does not depend on appearance and behavior of its people, but more important on its level of economy. Just mightiness on economy, values of a country would be well recognized, and its idea would be studied by others. However, appearance and behavior of people sometimes are so influencing by the culture of this country that it just show attribute of cultural history, but not the values as the author says. Taking a instance of Japan, there the custom that women should unconditionally attend upon their husbands is considered as a feudal conservative one, but no one can deny its value in economy development in the world. Therefore, evaluation on a society's ideas and values would not rely on appearance of people only.

Additionally, with the actuality that people endlessly follow fresh things and attempt new styles, the way people look, dress and act become abundantly. But this exuberant change just reflects some phenomena which is produced by economic development instead of ideas and values of a society. Especially, the behavior of some individuals does not depute the values and ideas of a country. For example, Abramovich, a Russian magnate on petroleum, has spent hundreds of million pounds on purchase and rebuild on a football club called Chelsea, which leads to a lost of currency in Russia and then weakens its economy. However, from his behavior the value of Russia is not well reflected. Thus it can be seen that appearance and behavior of people can not entirely evaluate a society.

To sum up, people's appearance and behavior can indicate some external phenomenon, but not entirely reflect ideas and values of a society.
