TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 478          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2008-8-3 12:45:34

The speaker asserts that beginners are more likely to make important discoveries than the experts in that field. I concede that it is true in the field where innovations play a crucial role. But in most fields, both innovations and experiences are in need and both beginners and experts can make their own contributions to the field they work in.

In the art field, innovations are more important than experiences, so no matter one is a beginner or an expert, the one with new ideas is more likely to succeed. For example, Vincent van Gogh, whose paintings are among the most expensive paintings in the world, started to learn painting after becoming an adult. After seeing some exhibitions of the Impressionism in Paris, he was enlightened and created Expressionism. On the contrast, many experts who learn painting all their lives leave no famous works. Another example is the monument of Vietnam War which was designed by a college student instead of experts in architecture field. It seems that one's achievement in art field has little to do with experience and young people are more likely to bring out new ideas that can impress people deeply.

In the scientific realm, both innovation and experience are crucial so that people of middle-age are more likely to make important discoveries. Though many scientists become famous at an old age, they actually made their initial discoveries in their thirties or forties. In the later years, they just use their knowledge and experience to revise or implement their theories. Sometimes the beginners and the experts work together to set a new theory. It is well-known that the structure of DNA was discovered by two young scientists, but they could not make this discovery without the help of several older scientists.

When it comes to social science or business, the experience tends to play a more important role than innovation. Admittedly, there are many examples that successful business companies set by young people grow up at a dramatic speed nowadays. But after the companies become mature, they will need more experienced people to be the leaders. Various suggestions can be made by young people, but the leader who makes the final decision must have the ability to reject some too extreme or crazy ideas and accept ones that can be put into practice. Beginners can bear the hard days at the first period of setting up companies, but they are also likely to make unwise decisions. At that time, experts' abundant experiences will be helpful.

In sum, beginners are usually good at thinking up good ideas while the experts are good at turning them down. Artists who have good ideas are likely to make great achievement but in other fields just ideas are not enough to make important discoveries. In my view, beginners' innovation and experts' experience should be combined to gain outstanding achievements.

In the art field, innovations are more important than experiences, so no matter one is a beginner or an expert, the one with new ideas is more likely to succeed. For example, Vincent van Gogh不知道你有没有听说过ETS把牛顿和爱因斯坦的例子叫做“抄袭”,世界范围内用的实在太多了,我估计凡高的一样,你要注意这点,其实有那么多画家给你用,莫奈、毕加索随便用啊,只是个建议, whose paintings are among the most expensive paintings in the world建议不要说钱,都知道他的画贵,但主要是艺术价值, started to learn painting after becoming an adult. After seeing some exhibitions of the Impressionism in Paris, he was enlightened and created Expressionism. On the contrast, many experts who learn painting all their lives leave no famous works. In the scientific realm好词!知道就是用不出来, both innovation and experience are crucial so that people of middle-age are more likely to make important discoveries. In sum, beginners are usually good at thinking up good ideas while the experts are good at turning them down. Artists who have good ideas are likely to make great achievement but in other fields just---读起来中国味稍多了建议用mere ideas are not enough to make important discoveries. In my view, beginners' innovation and experts' experience should be combined to gain outstanding achievements.
