"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

In the argument, the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center (GT) should expand the variety of vegetable seeds it stock for gardeners to increase the profit. To support his assertion, the author cites a national survey that more consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarkets. The fact that a gardening magazine at the Village News stand was sold out in three months is also introduced.  After careful scrutiny, I find the two evidences add little to the author's conclusion.

First, the survey conducted in national scope cannot reflect the opinion of the people of suburban town where GT serves. It is possible that the local people are all satisfied with the vegetables in the suburban town. Even if the survey can be applied to the town, the assumption that those unsatisfied people will grow their own vegetables is ungrounded. Maybe these people will keep on buying fresh vegetables in the supermarkets. It is also possible that they will sift to other market to pursue vegetables, such as vegetable stands or special markets. If these are the case, the survey is scare evidence to the assumption that more local people will buy seeds to grow themselves.

Second, the mere fact that the gardening magazine has sold out at one stand in three month cannot be the evidence of increasing demand for vegetable seeds. The magazine may be not concerning about the growing of vegetables at all. Or perhaps that the Village News stand has just decreased the amount of that magazine, leading to the selling out there. Given any of the scenarios, the evidence means nothing to the owner's suggestion.

Third, the project that once they increase the variety of vegetable seeds they will get more profit lacks credit. Even though the trend of more people growing their own vegetables is true, the suggestion cannot surly lead to the increasing profit of GT. It is possible that these kinds of vegetable the center stocks are not what the local people are inclined to grow. Probably the competitors of GT have more advantage in selling vegetable seeds with respect to the experiences and people's fond. It is also possible that the stock of seeds will increase their cost which may be not covering the income. Unless the owner eliminates such possibilities, the project is not convincing.

In sum, the argument is rarely supported. To strengthen it the owner should conduct a survey of the actual trend of the willing to grow vegetables on their own of the local people. The author also needs to provide the reason why the magazine was sold out and evidence of increasing profit after expanding of seed stock.
