TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

According to the speaker, it is the artists, but not the critic that creates the masterpiece with lasting value. I content to the speaker, as far as that the artists have created those masterpieces, however, if the masterpiece wants to have lasting value, we shall not ignore the contribution of critics.

Admittedly, it is the artists' colorful imagination, deep thoughts and outstanding skills that create the works. The artists play a great role in prospering our civilization. Without the artists, our society will get dull and our human being's life will become colorless. It is the Leonardo da Vinci that paints the " The Vitruvian Man", allowing us to appreciate such
marvelous sketch; it is the Eiffel that designs the Eiffel Tower, allowing us to admire such grandiose architecture; it is the Johann Strauss that composes "The Blue Danube", allowing us to enjoy such elegance symphony.
It is the Spielberg that directs the Saving Private Ryan, allowing us to watch such shocking films.

However, critics play an indelible role in giving society something of lasting value. Most of the artists' works, especially those masterpieces, are endued with the artists' abstruse thoughts and fantastic imagination, which are hard for ordinary people to understand. Without the comments of critics, it is hardly for the artists' works recognized by ordinary people, let alone bring lasting value to the society. A notable example is the great painter Picasso, whose collages are often too abstruse for ordinary people to appreciate. Imaging there had not been comments from the critics, it would be hard for ordinary people to get familiar with Picasso's masterpieces, let alone appreciate them. Without the contributions of critics, our society will lose lots of masterpieces with lasting values.

Besides, the critics' comments on the artists' works can provide feedbacks for artists and constructive criticisms can result in better work. Frequently, the artists are not aware of the shortages of their works. As for the critics, they usually detect the shortcomings of the artists' works. By informing the artists the problems of their works, the critics enable the artists improve their shortages and create better and better works for our society. For instance, in the field of film, the critics' comments enable the film directors to get aware of their works' problems. When the directors are directing their next films, they will pay attention to their former problems and their films will get better and better. The successes of many great film directors, such as Spielberg and Akira Kurosawa, contribute greatly to the critics' comments. In all fields of arts, nearly all the successes of artist's have closely interrelationship with the critics.

Not only the artists but the critics play great roles in the process of giving birth to the masterpieces. The cooperation between the critics and the artists make the civilization of our society more and more prosperous and the life of ordinary people more and more colorful.
