242 The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

In this argument, the arguer tries to persuade other collages and universities to adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s, for the reason that the honor code has proven to be successful. To make his suggestion convincing, the arguer shows the decreasing cases of cheating and a satisfactory survey result in Groveton. On a hasty overview of this deduction one will believe himself to perceive that the assumptions are reasonable, but this then becomes aware that the reasoning process lacks logical validity.

To begin with, the argument supposes that the correlation between the execution of honor code and reducing cheating case number is that the decreasing number attributes to the honor code. But the arguer failed to provide sufficient evidences to support the assertion. Perhaps the emphasis on grade lessened and the students need not to cheat to attend high grades. In addition, we don’t know whether the number reflect the true condition of cheating case. Maybe many students didn’t notify the faculty when they know the cheating cases taking account of destroying relationship among them. The cheating cases got less than the average in the old-fashion just proved the possibility.

Furthermore, the arguer quotes a survey result that most students have in mind that they unlikely cheat for the honor code. We need to know how much truth there is in this survey. Firstly, the author fails to provide assurances that these respondents are representative of all the students. If it is a relatively small number to draw such a conclusion, it is impossible to assess the validity of the results. Secondly, the conductor of this survey is the Groveton honor council. We don’t know how the survey designed and have to suspect whether it with a sort of leading.

Finally, if the arguer’s all the assumptions above are true, analyzing difference existing between Groveton and other colleges and universities is indispensable for concluding whether the same honor codes would prove equally effective for other colleges and universities. There may be some characteristics in Groveton distinct from other colleges and universities. For example, the students in Groveton show high respect to the principle made by college. The students are likely to obey the code while students in other colleges and universities wouldn’t.

To summarize, the conclusion attained in this argument is short of reliability for the evidences cited in the analysis fails to afford strong support to the arguer’s claim. To strengthen it, the author should provide more specific evidence concerning that the honor code being suitable to Groveton also appropriate to other colleges and universities. To better evaluate the argument we need to know more messages about the survey. And if more credible evidence prove decreasing number actually reflecting the truth which caused by honor code, the reasoning process would be impregnable.
