Issue143: Artists should pay little attention to their critics. Criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist’s creativity.
Critics: Those who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

   The speaker asserts that there is no need for artists to pay much attention to their critics simply for criticism is tempting to undermine the artist’s creativity. Of course, the speaker’s assertion is reasonable; however, the speaker just unnecessarily overstates the disadvantage of criticism. Critics evaluate art works aiming at encouraging the artists to pursue perfect in their career and guiding the audience to meaningful art works. So, as for me, I think the artists can benefit more from criticism rather than be constrained.
   First, as we all know, it’s hard for people to see their flaws by themselves and it is the same with artists. Sometimes it may be even harder for the artists to find the weaknesses and make progresses when their works are popular among the audience who are not professional and even can’t get the accurate or comprehensive meaning of the works. Taking the case of the film industry, we can see there are many bloody or porn films which are sold well and very popular but lack of value. This situation may confuse the artists or even mislead them to be satisfied with their works. So they need the critics who have a good knowledge of the subject and understand profoundly to point out both their strengthens and weakness. Then the artists would be able to pursue the perfect by taking their suggestions.

      Secondly, getting stuck in career is very common for artists who have to work along with inspiration which is not under control. Critics who have evaluated many pieces of arts are always rich in experience and see things in ways that may be different from the artist’s. It’s great for the artist to find a new direction and get rid of the troublesome career. So, in my opinion, the artists can benefit a lot from the criticism.
      Nevertheless, I admit that in some cases criticism may undermine or constrain the artists’ creativity. For instance, poor criticism or criticism taken to the extreme have the effect of undermining an artist’s belief in himself or herself. And some critics have biases which wrap their judgment. If so, their judgment ruin the artists’ creativity instead of inspire them. In some cases, the critics can even make mistakes when judging art works due to their limited knowledge. Maybe that’s why Van Gogh’s paintings and Paul Cezanne’ works were not highly praised at that time.
      To sum up, artists could absolutely benefit from the appropriate and advisory criticism while be undermined by the poor or extreme criticism. Therefore, it’s the artists’ duty to take most advantage of the helpful criticism and protect themselves from the harmful criticism. Only in this way will they be able to launch a flourishing career.
