157. There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer’s expectations or desires.

In my opinion, everything in the world is subjective, and absolute objective actually could not exist, just as the statement says that all observation is influenced by people’s background and their subjective opinions and hopes. The most contradictory might happen in the scientific field, where we always think is neutral and unbiased, might not be the way we assume at all. In the following paragraphs, I will talk about some behind reasons lead to the statement.

First, the reason why everyone sees things only from their own perspective might largely depend on the way our brain functions. For example, when we first encounter some new knowledge, our brain will not just let it input in like the ways computer functions, but rather use the prior experience to understand it and build it upon the prior knowledge we have. According to Jean Piaget, the father of early childhood education and the founder of constructivism education, our brain could only digest the part related to the prior experience as the brain need things to build upon. This demonstrates that since we have been raised in different environment and cultural background, which means we have diverse prior experience, we understand and interpret everything diversely. Actually, we see this happens a lot when we show the same thing or tell the same story to different people.

Moreover, as social animals, we are largely influence by people around us and the environment we live in. Maybe the only time we are 100% objective to everything is the moment we are born. In order to survive in the social surroundings, we have to learn from each other and imitate people near us. Consequently, these social elements become our own values and judges. When scientists have been shown the same data, they interpret it and understand it differently according to their own perspectives. Actually, none of them is incorrect because these interpretations might fit in different surroundings. In this case, all of them are subjective and there is actually no way to be purely objective.

However, is objective observation possible and meaningful? As I have said before, we are born with our brains resisting direct input and we are social animals adapting to the environment we live in. Thus, absolute objective observation is not possible by both nature and nurture. In addition, absolute objective view might not be meaningful at all, because such views could not survive and of course have no way to fit in any culture and environment. Nevertheless, this does not give us excuse to be biased, although we have to sometimes, we should still try our best to be relatively objective to view the world and interpret everything.

The most contradictory might happen in the scientific field, where we always think is neutral and unbiased, might not be the way we assume at all.

Actually, we see this happens a lot when we show the same thing or tell the same story to different people. observationinterpretation是否是一个概念呢? That is not the way I see it是否等同于 That is not what I saw?)

In this case, all of them are subjective and there is actually no way to be purely objective.(这一段论证有点绝对,如果按照作者的思路推得话,那么关于“地心说”和其他很多现在证实是false scientific notions的都不算错,这一点显然和常识不符合,除非作者给出correctincorrect的定义,那么这涉及到科学的真理)
