题目:ARGUMENT191 - The following is a letter from a professor at Xanadu College to the college's president.
"The development of an extensive computer-based long-distance learning program will enhance the reputation of Xanadu College. This program would allow more students to enroll in our courses, thereby increasing our income from student tuition. Traditional courses could easily be adapted for distance learners, as was shown by the adaptation of two traditional courses for our distance learning trial project last year. Also, by using computer programs and taped lectures, faculty will have fewer classroom obligations and more time to engage in extensive research, thereby enhancing the reputation of Xanadu."

In this argument, the author concludes that Xanadu College will enhance its reputation and increase income if it develop the computer-based long-distance learning program. In addition, to support his or her claim, the author point out that two traditional courses for distance learning was adapted last year. Careful examination the evidence the author claim, however, reveal that it leads to little credible support the conclusion.
First of all, the author claims that the computer-based long-distance learning program will enhance the reputation of Xanadu College. However, through this argument, we cannot find any evidence to support this view, only that this program will increase enroll students in Xanad College. While, there is not a clause relation between large number of student and college's reputation. Many factors, like the college's history, the courses it supply, how many excellent graduated students it educated, etc., will influent the reputation. Moreover, the author fails to convince us the possibility of increasing income after take the computer-based long-distance learning program. All this conclusion is based on the point that many student will more like take college, if they were provide this program. While, no evidence show that students are more likely enroll the college is for the long-distance learning program.
In addition, the author provide an evidence that two traditional courses were adapted for the long-distance learning program, in order to convince us that it is easy to translate traditional courses for distance learning trial project. While, only two sample cannot convince us this claim. Further, we know the communication in course between students and teachers is very important for education, How would the long-distance learning program provides this function. How would the long-distance learning program warrant its education efficient, without this function.
Moreover, the author did not mention the cost of this program, if the program is very expansive, and only a few student enroll in. How did he make sure the college’s income will increase?
Finally, no evidence show that the long-distance learning program will save
faculty's time and they will had more time to engage in extensive research The author did not concern the fact that the faculty will prepare two methods of one course, one is for traditional course, the other is for the long-distance learning program. After all, there still is a difference between traditional courses and long-distance learning program. Further, if there are many students enroll in Xanadu College as the author claim, the faculty must to spend more and more time to check the student's issue.
