TOPIC: ARGUMENT101 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals.
"In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of our customers."
In this argument, to increase profits and improve the customers' health, the author asserts they should fortify soy protein in their Wheat-O cereal. To support the conclusion, he cites a study, showing people eat more soybeans have lower cholesterol levels. The argument seems somewhat convincing at first glance. However, after a deep consideration, it suffers some logical flaws.
To begin with, the author fails to assure me that soybeans will be helpful for healthy. Although the study shows the fact that people consuming more soybeans have considerable lower cholesterol levels, the statistic shows no directly testimony that the soybeans do help their health. It is entirely possible that all the participants are in a allowed healthy level of cholesterol, even those eat no soy products possess a higher level. Moreover, maybe the cholesterol are necessary for human body while the the subjects may drops too low to their health. What's more, the author fails to mention whether it is harmful to eat so many soybeans in a week. Perhaps the soybeans contains little destructive constituent, which a over consuming may take more disadvantages than advantages.
Additionally, even if the soybeans do conduce to our health, it is still dubious that by reinforcing the Wheat-O cereal with soy protein will increase their sales. Consumer market are complex and varied. Enjoy excellent gross sales owning to various fact, such as qualities, prices, advertises and so forth. Perhaps, adding the soy protein may bring little interesting of the consumer, who may concerned about their health but think soy protein will be profitless. Or perhaps, with the addition of soy protein, their cereal will change into a unwelcome or even weird taste, leading their cereal hardly achieved in sales.
Moreover, the author also scarcely persuade us such improvement will profitable. Maybe the addition of soy protein is a complex and difficult process in the whole manufacture. That add such protein may have to introduce a serious of equipments as well as more expert employees, which will cost considerable funds. Thus leading the company have little money in the later product packages and publicizes. With so many discards of money, it is a huge doubt whether such improvement will be a Pyrrhic victory.
In sum, the author should provide us a more detailed study as well as a exhaustive statistics, which can support the cereal with soy protein will conducive to good health and will be indeed popular as well. Also, a feasibility study will be also required, since whether the new cereal will be profitable is the principal issue. With the materials mentioned above, will the argument be more convincing. |
