TOPIC: ISSUE203 - "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."

The one who saves others in price of his own life is our hero, a person who contributes much to the nation is undoubtly a hero, and a man who behaves bravely is still be viewed as our hero today. It seems that the criterions of heroes or heroines are similar to the era when our grandparents are of our age. However, the characters of our society are much different now. People all want to become heroes or heroines 100 years ago, while we are immersed in bars, internet, parties, even sex and drugs nowadays.

It's an era of depravation. People are becoming isolated.
In the past, people preferred to go out of the house to visit and chat with others; they had many face to face contacts with others. Today, we are hiding in our rooms and chatting with our so called friends on internet. We become to feel lonely even we talk much with others via MSN, Skye or other IMU tools. We are more and more indifferent, hundred of years ago, our precedents were always ready to help others, no matter how hard it was. However, we would leave as quickly as we can if observe a weak girl being robbed by some strong men today. In the last century, thousands of people were willing to devote their life to science and technologies, they were immersing in the world of exploring and creating, while our students hate studying, they enjoy endless parties, drinking, smoking, and even drugs and sex. Today, the central pursuit of the society is not the truth of the life, but those superficial things such as material.

This is the contemporary society. Although local wars and violence do exist, yet the mainstream is peace. People tend to enjoy life rather than to pursuit something of lasting value in such background. There is no denying most of the precious traditional merits such as helping, brave, aggressive, ambition and etc are still be view as good quality, yet most of these are not taken into practice for most of us. On one hand, we admire those heroes or heroines who are so brave to overcome difficulties and help others. On the other hand, we shrink back when confronting dangers. It's true that we would do something to help others if it would not bring much harm to us, for example, donor some money to those poor people. However, it's true that we would like to be a craver rather to be a hero if it is dangerous to become a hero. In a word, people in the past like to become heroes, while we prefer to be safe so that we can enjoy the wonderful parties and the excited dating.

Are the heroes today much different from the past? As far as we concern, the answer is no. However, our society does change dramatically. If we just investigate Bill Gate's glory and other heroes' or heroines' courage, we would be inspired by their justice or ambitions, and hence forget the general depravation of our people.
