The speaker asserts that all faculty should work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. I concede that some of them work outside could indeed improve the quality of insturction at college and university level, while whether all faculty should go outside, it depends on different situation.
Admittedly, the faculty's work experience relevant to the courses they teach will do good to the quality of instruction. First many theories come from the practice, so if they work outside, their experience will appeal to the students and the students will understand the theories deeper and broader; Second if the faculty have trouble in doing academic research, the experience may help them get new thoughts or amazing findings. Hence, in some respects, it is wise for faculty to work outside the academic.
Furthermore the goal of education is to teach students some basic and nessceary life skills, and provide them a good position in job market. Nowadays our society is developing so fast that many knowledge in our books are out of date, through the faculty's experience working outside the students could get many useful and latest information about the field which they will be devoted to, and could help them adapt to the competitive society as soon as possible. Hence, it is very important for faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the coures they teach.
Finally, however, in other respects, working outside is not the necessary way for faculty to promote the quality of teaching. First it is not wise for the facuty working in some academic fields go outside such as philosophy and philology; Second if the students do not accept the experience, the quality of inst instruction is not signficiantly improved. There are many factors improving the quality of instruction, like students should work hard, experience some trouble by themselves and at last achieve success. Hence many other things should be required to improve the quality of instuction.
In sum, we should require some faculty in some certain fields instead of requiring all the faculty working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, and through this we could improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level.
