issue 136
The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.
The speaker asserts that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare, and he oversimplifies this issue. In my opinion, choosing one thing from another is not that easy Yes or No game, but many other aspects should be taken into consideration.
Generally speaking, people have a tendency to achieve the most individual interests from the choices they make. The interests include power, wealth, as well as happiness. Political leaders make the decision not only according to the public, but also the consideration of themselves privilege as well; business men prefer the strategy that helps gain the most profits; and most people like to choose things which will please them most. In some sense, it is very easy for people to make a choice just by ensuring what they choose satisfies them most, or, even if not the most satisfiable one, better than any other will do as well. Therefore people rarely have no choice in the daily life.
However, as some may argue, too many choices mean no choice. Sometimes people are helpless and confused when confronting a diversity of choices. Since each of them gets its own advantages and disadvantages, it is difficult choose one from the rest by simply comparison and to conclude which fits best. For one thing, the incomplete information people get blinds their eyes and they do not know how to make a better choice. For another, the pursuing of perfect solutions, which seems to be somewhat greedy, increases the difficulties. As the uncertainty and greed arise, some may suffer a lot from the various choices.
Even more, as soon as group's interests are aroused, and as soon as a larger unit of people's belief is challenged because of one' own choice, various problems come. Take Sarah Palin, the vice-presidential candidate for example, Ms. Palin is known to conservatives for opting not to have an abortion after learning that the child she was carrying, her youngest, had Down syndrome. The anti-choicer who use "it is not a choice, it is a child" as a rally cry to force women give birth, and for Ms. Palin, this means more than a child. It is almost impossible to exaggerate how important that is to the conservative faith community. In fact she did not really have a choice to make. Then the anti-choicer could point out "look at her, she did the right thing so should all the women." They did not want all the women have a choice. There are many similar examples when issues like feminism and religions are involved as a result that different cultures and education background lead to different evaluations. Under certain circumstance, the group may be forced to make the choice which deviates from its original purpose but rather to meet others' ideas, and this may even be called "choice."
It is never easy for one to make a choice. Striking a balance between individual interests and group's ones means abandon some of the individual's interests, and this is not his or her choice at all. |
