Argument 1

The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.

"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."

The arguer recommends that Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products, will gain profits from building their next new store in Plainsville. To bolster the recommendation, the arguer points out that their products have obtained previous successful experience at other regions and the fact that the residents are crazing at the weight training and aerobics classes. A report from Plainsville merchants is also cited which is about that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. However, close scrutiny of each of supporting evidence reveals that it lends little credible support to the arguer’s recommendation.

In the first place, the training clubs and aerobics classes are full which doesn't become a necessary cause for the success of Nature's Way, whose focused market is health food and other health-related products. The arguer assumes that people who exercises regularly are also interested in their food. Lacking such evidence it is equally possible that aside from physical exercises other ways of leading a healthy lifestyles will not go down with Plainsville residents. In fact, that's mostly likely that the residents at Plainsville prefer such free physical exercises as running, jogging. It's even less possibility to select the health diet if they have already participated in these exercises to keep health.

In addition, even if the sales of shoes and clothing for engaging in the physical exercises are high all the time, absence of the evidence that the sales have relationship with the successful marketing in Plainsville makes the reason sound unconvincing. Maybe it is unsuitable to build a new store by other factors omitted by mistake. Perhaps wearing such shoes and clothing happens to be a fashion at that moment or sports apparel are less expensive and more convenient than other kinds of clothing, for example, housewives might choose to wear so cheap and relaxed to doing housework rather than going for modern suits. Then, the report just from the merchants who operate such stores is short of reliability on account of spreading advertising information on their goods in high demand.

Finally, even assuming that the products of Nature's Way are popular with numerous customers nation-widely, the arguer failed to consider the possible facts that there may be other stores selling relevant food and products. For that matter, the local stores are perhaps familiar with the residents, which would have accompanied their parents or grandparents a long period of time. The affection and connection between the old brand and local people are hardly to break up. Other conjecture for the possible unwelcome is deduced under the condition that the company can’t ensure the residents are fond of their food’s taste.

Overall, the scant evidence and doubtful assumptions the recommendation proves nothing about the reason for building a new store at Plainsville. In order to better evaluate the argument, I would need more information about the residents are truly tend to pay for the health food and relevant product, as well as clearer evidence of what competitive opponents Nature’s Way might face in Plainsville.
