Like what most people are taught, loyalty is one of most important virtues of human being. But it also turns out to be a destructive rather than a positive force whether it is to ones school or place of employment, or to any institution. I strongly agree with the speaker that it is too often a destructive force though it has positive force.
I admit that loyalty plays a positive role in many cases, often become the object of praise and used as a source of strength and courage. The famous marathon race comes from the site of that battle, Marathon, Greece to commemorate a hero named Phidippides who was loyal to Greece. Open historical books, we can find so many great heroes given their lives to the country of people they are in loyal to. However, loyalty means beliefs and adherence, also means cost, which often a destructive cost.
Loyalty has exclusiveness, where the destructive result from. Loyalty to friends means to protect his or her interests, often at expense of other's. Loyalty to a school or place of employment means dependency, often keeps people from appreciating and becoming a part of new environment.
Loyalty to an institution means implementing the concept and sense of worth, often form conflicts when dealing with others. So loyalty is born to be a double edged sword, which often hurts people who hold it and even not.
Over and blind loyalty is very dangerous. That because that kind of loyalty makes people blind and often devote to things they are in loyal of excessively. So people cannot see the side effects of what they adore blindly, and they often expense its destructive force. Most Japanese militarists are misled by their blind loyalty to mikado and they give the extreme thinking a chance to create the human catastrophe. On individual level, the blind loyalty is often a barrier to progress since it deprives people of opportunities of confession and innovation. There are countless scientific workers accomplish nothing just because their insensate loyalty to some theory and their unwillingness to break what they believe.
What's more, loyalty is often an instrument of some people to make use of people and sometimes loyalty stem from ignorance and stupidity. Those who are in the control, no matter what kind of fields, often reach and amplified their potential of destructive force. Since there are people who are familiar to loyalty, they create something like Japanese Aum Doomsday Cult and cheating idiotes to help them to achieve their evil and illegal aims.
In summary, one side of loyalty is virtue but it is often a destructive force than a positive one. We should keep a correct attitude toward loyalty so that we can prevent its negative effects and keep our mind active and active so that we can avoid to be misled.
