TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* forinsomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In arecent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for threeweeks on lavender-scented pillows in

a controlled room where their sleep wasmonitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usualsleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During thesecond week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, theyslept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During thethird week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previoustwo weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

The conclusion that the study has provedthat lavender cures insomnia in a short time at first glance seems sound basedon the evidence that volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in earliertime of the study. To prove these hypotheses, however, needs more carefulreasoning, which otherwise may render it unconvincing.

The threshold problem involves thequantities of volunteers and the lasting time. Are 30 volunteers enough torepresent all the typical kinds of people across the world for us to draw a conclusion?We have no idea of the sign of procedure for sampling and the total number ofthe volunteers may be a bit small. What's more, we know insomnia is a chronic illnessthat might last for quite a long time, only three weeksare a little too hasty to generalize the effectiveness of lavender flowers. Theconclusion based on this kind of study is unpersuasive.

Even if we concede the validity of the study'spremise anyway, the author’s conclusion is unwarranted. Firstly, the conditionof the volunteer in the third week is unknown. Will they be more tired orrelaxed? Actually, they may sleep more soundly owing to the use of lavenderflowers or it may be just because they sleep less soundly in the second weekand need more sleep. Furthermore, the notion that whether volunteers continuedtheir usual sleeping medication is an extra variable in the study, which couldhave influenced the effectiveness of lavender flowers. In short, without rulingout these possible explanations, the study is open to doubt.

Besides, the author fails to mention theinfluence of the circumstances around the studying place. Common sense informsus that in a controlled room, the majority of people may feel nervous andcannot sleep well. Also, some of them may get used to the outer space with thetime pass by while some do not. So to obtain the consequence of the study merelythrough observing their qualities in sleeping is precarious. It is highlypossible that people varies in sleeping according to their adaptation.

For the final analysis, even if the processof the study is perfect, it is only in its preliminary stage, we cannot get anyconcrete conclusions to help establish medical theories by the single study. Toprove the medical use of curing insomnia, we need different research groups torepeat valid tests over and over again. Moreover, the concept of "over ashort period of time" is unacceptable because it is a vague time span andcannot be guaranteed by the evidence provided.

To sum up, the way for curing insomnia bylavender flowers based on the study could provide important information andpotentially benefit people suffering insomnia. However, to be more believable,the author should improve the validity and feasibility of the study design.Also, it demands more examination before drawing the conclusion for medicaluse.
