preface:
first, what i want to make clear is I am so-called non-typical F1, so maybe
not that helpful to most of the xdjms here.
second, its just my personal experience. if i was declined again today, its
nothing. now i made it, is it useful? i am also not that sure.
third, it's just a beginning of my new life. is it a good choice? nobody
knows. I can do nothing but hold on, and i will hold on. anyway, I still have
my lucky star who will always support me.

personal background:
rejected twice in 1999, xxx university economics phd admission without financial
aid. so had to go visa on thursday. BUT actually, dtt took me as 1000.
3 years full-time working experience from 1998 to 2001, one year in a famous american company,
in the corporate finance department. part time job in an investment banking
firm from last July to this Feb.
now, domestic mba, finance phd offer from xxx university, 4 years fellowship

general information in the visa lobby this afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30:
i cant clearly remeber, only a genaral impression. please correct me if i am
wrong
vos are nice except dtt.
around 20 got visa, half is f2 or business visa, the other half is f1.
not many dd, most of the f1s r mm

the interview process:
vo: xxx
me: yes sir(go to window 9)
me: good afternoon sir, here is my card, how r u
vo: fine, thank u. (then he began playing computer)
vo: your gre and toefl please
me: i didnt take gre, but gmat. here you r
vo: ok. how many universities you apply
me: i only apply for 5 schools that fit me very well, they r xxx, xxx, xxx,
xxx, xxx, finally xxx gave me the offer.
vo:only xxx gave u offer?
me: yes, it's a perfect fit between the school and myself, so i withdraw the
other schools.
vo: why this school?
me: as i have told you, its a perfect fit. first, my future advisor,
professor xxx, the chairman of the finance department, is a leading scholar
in my chosen area, xxx. he is also an expert in xxx. his research interest
fit me very well. second, they
only admit one finance phd each year(interrupt by vo)
vo: why us?
me: modern finance theory originates in us(interrupt by vo)
vo: why not china
me: i'd like to. but u know, finance is an emerging subject in china
althought its a booming business in china. its too short for us to carry out
a mature finance phd program.(i want to continue, but interrupt by vo)
vo: your plan?
me: i want to be a financial specilist in corporate merger and acquisition
transactions in domestic market. I will come back china to find a position,
such as department manager, in an investment banking firm(interrupt by vo)
vo: why not stay in us?
me: (a specific answer only fits my background, sorry)
vo: definitely u will stay in the united states, u do have advantage over
american natives. those investment bankings only want to hire ur chinese."
me: i want to explain, but dont let me to say a word
me: i want to show him some finance professional magzines, both chinese and
english, but he dont want to have a look
me: i want to show him the introduction of the secondary offering project i
took in the investment banking firm, but he dont want to have a look. then he
said
vo: please keep silence, otherwise you ll have trouble.(I didnt hear it
clearly, only his meaning)
silence and he playing computer for 30 seconds
vo: definitely u will stay in the united states
me: sir, you know,(interrupt by vo)
vo: your working experience?
me: blabla
vo: how do u feel your mba program?
me: a nice one, actually its a joint program between(interrupt by vo)
vo: please go to window ten and have a nice trip.
me: thanks and have a nice day.

personal experience:
1. be confident
2. be specific to your career plan. at least its helpful to our future path.
3. be professional. i mean we should act as what we will be. I told him i
will be a banker, and I believe he trust me, at least in this point. i didnt
waer suit, but i dress like finance professional. if you want to be
professor, u should have scholar manner. if u want to own ur business, u
should be aggressive.
4. if u r facing dtt, forget about all of your documents. he wont let you
show them, just speak out what you want to let him know, although sometimes
he ll interrupt u. in fact, dtt only ask for my gmat and toefl scores.
5. in the interview process, i really couldnt hear his voice. I just said: "i
cant hear your voice. please adjust ur microphone", at least twice.

epilogue:
thanks my parents, although they dont like my application, they always
support me.
thanks my elder brother, who always give critical suggestion to my career
path.
thanks my girl friend, the angel from the heaven. without you, my life will
have no sparkles. you , but not the visa, are the key to my splendid future. it
wont be a lonely journey for me any more.
thanks my bros, xq and wjt, you 2 helped me in my worst time. although u 2
wont know this post forever, but u r my best friends.
thanks han yh, u gave me much help in the reasoning of my answer. u deserve

thanks my colleagus, my previous manager, my MBA alumni, my teachers, my
