As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

The history of technology development can be traced back to the Paleolithic era when human beings made simple tools out of stones and animal bones. Modern technology has been advancing rapidly since the industrial revolution and people are using more and more technology in daily lives to solve problems. But the statement that the ability of humans to think for themselves will deteriorate due to this trend is not persuasive based on the following analysis.

Before we decide whether to agree with the statement, we need to clarify the definition of “the ability to think”. When we rely on calculators to calculate, the ability to do calculation in our mind will deteriorate. When we rely on personal computers to type, our ability to write will be impaired. But these are not the ability to think but the ability to practice certain things, just as the ability to cook or wash. The ability to think is on a higher and more abstract level: it is the ability of finding ways to solve a problem, combined with the ability to make judgments and decisions. When faced with contradictory narrations of one event we try to find out which is more logical and reasonable and to explain why there are different narrations. When scientists see new phenomena they try to establish proper theories or models. Such are the ways in which the ability of thinking is used.

Now that the ability of thinking is defined, it will be self-evident that the development of technology itself is the result of higher ability to think, since the goal of technology is to solve problems for people. Stones are the very first tool for hunting, steam engines are created to produce incessant power in place of water flow, and the first computer is designed to satisfy the need of trajectory calculation. It is hard to imagine a primeval hunter coming up with the idea of a gun, or the ancient people having the concept of electronic devices. Besides, the increasingly perplexed technical devices requires advanced ability to think, because we need to master more complex knowledge in order to use them correctly. In short, the development of technology propels the advancing of the ability to think, and the ascending ability to think results in more complex technology.

Modern technology has played an indispensable role in almost every corner of the contemporary society. Though the reliance on technology has impaired some of the abilities of human beings, it has not deteriorated, if not improved, the ability of humans to think for themselves.
