刚收到了一封邮件,现在有点蒙,求解教授的意思,为什么不直接说要录我……
Dear XXX,
I have been looking at your application for the MSc at the University of British Columbia.
I have been impressed by your research and work in the areas of data analysis, optimization and computation. While I work in a field that combines stochastic modeling and dynamics, these areas are overlapping more and more with stats and optimization, as we develop more sophisticated models that are valuable in applications.
I am wondering if you would be interested to come to UBC, to pursue your graduate degree in the Institute of Applied Math. We have identified a number of different applications where we would like to combine stochastic dynamics with data analysis, imaging, optimization, or also in the area of networks, so your background would fit in well. You can see some of my research on the website below, and I could also discuss some new projects with you.
I also want to let you know that if you did come to UBC in Mathematics, then you would need to make up some background in dynamical systems ad stochastic modeling. But given that applications require a mix of different techniques, it is not unusual that our students would need to fill in some areas, and we offer good courses where you would gain this background.
Please let me know if you find this opportunity interesting and we can communicate about it.
Thanks
LZ来更新一下进展~晚上回复了说有兴趣,问了些关心的问题,马上就收到回复了,基本是稳了,Lz没有陶瓷,申请的时候需要填写三位有兴趣的教授也是选的另外三位【懵比脸】
I am glad to hear that you are enthusiastic about this direction - it is great you have written back so quickly!
About your questions:
My students have been guided to research directions by me - they don’t have to come up with it on their own. I work on a number of different applications, and with other collaborators, so we would discuss those and see which one is a good fit and interesting for you. So I am happy to guide you and introduce you to some research areas that will be interesting for you. Also, in the courses that you take, you will have the opportunity to do some projects where you can also learn more about the projects while also gaining more mathematical experience. So I will help you to select some good projects that will put you on a good path.
For career options: Some of my supervisees have gone on to work in industry, while others have gone to academia. e.g. mostrecently two of my students have to gone to work for companies doing stochastic modelling - one in finance and a second in a consulting company that works on different topics like gaming, weather, etc. Others have taken the academic path, in which case they have finished a PhD and done postdoctoral research. Others have done study that specializes in math finance, so they also went to the finance industry. But I am not working so much in finance these days, but rather in other applications. But many of the mathematical tools have a lot of similarities.
As far as a TA or RA fellowship - normally if we make a graduate offer (besides accepting into the program) then it will come with a TA and/or RA, so you don’t have to apply for that, it should be done automatically.
I think you should be able to learn about dynamics without any problem. It is quite normal that my students come in and need to learn more about a certain area -e.g. some come in with less numerical experience, or less experience in probability, and then they take a course or two to get up to speed. So that should not be a problem. Also, there are other grad students around with different strengths, and you can learn from each other too.
I will work on the paperwork on this end, but please let me know if you have other questions in the meantime.
Cheers,
RK
