因为在香港读本科，然后本专业及相近的人出国的人真的不多，特别是研究型的更少。所以来到gter寻求各位前辈的帮助。

我的背景
本科：香港top3 经济学
cGPA: 3.2/4  有一次学院deans‘ list major GPA:3.55
mathematical methods in econmics 1&2 B+
统计&计量 A-
paper:正在和advisor修改，准备发，英文，应该快要投稿了
exchange ：大四最后一学期去德国曼海姆大学
推荐信：advisor: phd in Rochester/ 是学校一个比较6的研究所的所长，在香港政界应该比较有名经常参与制定政策这种
其他找学校的带过课的老师都是国外比较好的大学的phd

我的初步定位：必须覆盖学费及有一定的生活补助。不想再砸钱去读了。而且根据自己的性格等多方面觉得research类的比较适合自己。

1、本校 mphil or phd
2、欧洲大陆 master （eg. 曼海姆 etc）
3、新加坡 master research program
4、英美的可以覆盖学费及一定生活开支的项目（这是了解最少的，所以恳请各位前辈多多指教一下这些方面的）

我的问题：
  1、香港的GPA真的被刻意压的很低，对比美本的gpa inflation，感觉gpa是很大的硬伤。不知招生官是否会考虑不同地区不同学校GPA绝对值是有差别的
  2、还没有进行的交换是否有用？

希望各位前辈给予帮助，在此表示十分感谢

I. 已經估到是那家大學.....
are you on the economics theory track then? or any math/stat minor?
solid maths / stat background is essential for graduate school admission.

This is also essential for admission for any good academics economics master,
since the ad com has to make sure you are able to handling graduate level econ, and know how it looks like and thus make sure you are really interested in that.

II. 香港的grading scheme其他大學估計也是知道的. 最少, WES是知道的......
你這個GPA估計是2nd up. 目測是top 5-20% of the class.

2. quite many good economics master in EU don't charge much tuition fee. just try a list of them.
(count the number of reference letter you have. the number of English teaching econ master are not that many anyway.)

3. NUS的MRes應該不會比CUHK MPhil難/易很多, 個人覺得你在HK有主場優勢都拿不下的話, SG的機會不會更大.

4. English-speaking world: try Tufts (since no PhD there, i.e. TA/RA go to MS), UBC, Queens, Western (Canada).

you have the 1st sem of year 4 finished at the time of application.

if you had a good track record in math/stat progress, instead of rushing all them in the last sem, this should not be a problem.

indeed, rushing all those math/stat in the last sem is also impossible. they have tons of pre-requisites.

I guess you should had courses like Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Analysis, Probability, Statistics, right? (I mean those with course code MATH/STAT 2XXX, instead of those year 1 1XXX, or ECON 2XXX stuffs)
if not the case.......good luck. Wish you are still in year 2 in Fall 2016 then.

Thanks a lot for your suggetions.

I only take econ math 1&2. They include calculus but quite easy, not sophisticated. And I did take "advanced economy" concentration like game theory. But I think I need to take more math/stat courses this semester.

Then the problem comes. Year 4 courses have not finished at the time of application. Delay graduation might be a better choice for me.

let me describe a bit more detailed.

in order to prepare for a PhD, or MPhil, in economics, the best idea is to read math & econ in bachelor.
for sure not every school allow this combination, a economics with minor in math/stat is also a good choice.

What is sure is: only taking the core mathematics requirement (which is normally offered by department of economics, i.e. focus more on computation instead of proofs, which is easy for sure) is far from enough.

Normally the following junior level course (year 1 /2) are listed as the admission requirement for some econ master:
- Multivariate Calculus (aka Calculus III in US system)
- Linear Algebra
- Calculus based Probability
- Proof-based Statistics
are necessarily. (of course also intermediate micro macro and metrics)

There is a reason for doing them in the junior year: one need them as the foundation to read other advanced math/stat course in the senior year, e.g. whatever things like stochastic, differential eqn, optimization, inference, multivariate stat, and etc.....
(P.S. I skipped Mathematical and then Real Analysis here already.....)

If one don't have any of them (which is a norm for econ major only student).......well, I wont say this is the end of the world (and for sure it isn't)
but one will have tons of challenges during graduate level economics courses, and obstacles in admission to solid academic econ master.
