147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
People are always talking about the conflict between tradition and modernization. If there is one, which I take leave to doubt, then it is because people misunderstand the true meaning of both tradition and modernization. In my point of view, however, tradition and modernization are not mutually exclusive choice and we can combine them to enhance our lives.
Admittedly, there is severe debate about the issue of tradition and modernization among people who hold old opinions and those who like popular fashion. We usually hear some people, especially senior ones saying that the young has given up their tradition, their roots, simply because they believe in freedom and enjoy sex liberty as well as punk style of life. While young people might think such old people are too out of date to accept the fresh trend and be too far away from “modernization”. But let us get down to fundamentals and see what is tradition. As far as I am concerned, it is not merely the old opinions or conventions but the beliefs, values, ways of life, handed down from one generation to the next, that could be defined as tradition. That is to say, tradition is the symbol and basis of different nations, without the root, a nation could hardly establish its modernization.
Modernization is, on the contrary, not incompatible with tradition, but well congruent with our traditional customs, not only because the basis of modernization is tradition but also because we human beings need both of them in our lives. They are not necessarily exclusive. Our daily life is just a good example to show such perfect agreement: we celebrate our traditional festival such as Spring Festival while at the same time watching TV, telephoning to good friends, or sending e-mail through Internet--all of which are modern technology; or we can listen to traditional music or opera such as Peking Opera, Chuan Qu, while enjoying the journey to New York with the help of modern transportation such as airplane. Our life seems as a natural harmony with tradition as well as modernization, without each one, it is incomplete and hard to imagine. As Larry, one of the famous anthropologists and professors in my university once put it,(and I paraphrase) " Only with both tradition and modernization in our daily life, could our human beings find and enjoy the true value of life."
Moreover, it is quite unnecessary to choose either tradition or modernization, we can select both of the two. Many successful creative attempt and experience have proved that traditional arts could be better understood and well appreciated, if adding modern flavors to them. A case in point is the Chinese Twelve Girl Band, who is famous for its excellent performance of traditional instruments such as Jing hu, Er hu etc, as well as its modern style. Since the band successfully show the essence of Chinese tradition in a modern way, it is no wonder that they won so many awards and become well known around the world. More important, however, is the fact that such modern-style tradition make people around world notice, understand, and appreciate our culture and tradition.
To sum up, I strongly believe that tradition and modernization are not incompatible. Neither adherence to tradition, nor sticking to modernization, could by themselves, change the reality, what in fact develop a society and improve the quality of our lives is the interplay of the two. If we could combine them, it is expected to have a ever brighter future—people enjoy the traditional culture as well as modern convenience.
