Dr. Bin Chen is now hiring PhD students in Computer Graphics and Visualization with full scholarships at the University of Melbourne. The University of Melbourne is a world-renowned institution, consistently ranked among the top universities globally, placing 13th in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and 37th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025.

He is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor in US system) in Computer Graphics and Visualization at the School of Computing and Information Systems, University of Melbourne. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik, and a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge. He received his PhD from City University of Hong Kong.
His research aims to push the boundaries of realism in display systems, covering various aspects of the visual signal lifecycle, including acquisition (computational photography), visualization (computational display), and perception (material appearance perception). His work has been published in top graphics/vision/robotics conferences and journals, including SIGGRAPH/SIGGRAPH Asia (ACM Transactions on Graphics), CVPR, ICCV, Eurographics (Computer Graphics Forum), and ICRA. One of his works was selected as a Best Paper Award Finalist (33 out of 8000+ submissions) in 2022.
His research interests include, but are not limited to, the following:
Computational Display and Perception: investigating glass-free 3D display, virtual reality, and augmented reality from hardware aspects (optics, imaging) to software aspects (rendering), as well as the human perception of displayed material appearance.
Computational Imaging: exploring AI-driven imaging techniques for scene representation, depth-of-field synthesis and manipulation, and HDR imaging.
He has been actively contributing to the research community, serving as a reviewer for more than 15 prestigious venues, such as SIGGRAPH, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, Eurographics, and Pacific Graphics. He served as a SIGGRAPH Asia technical paper session chair in 2023 and served on the program committee for Pacific Graphics in 2024. He has collaborated broadly with world-class computer graphics researchers from institutions/companies such as the University of Cambridge, Max-Planck Institute for Informatics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Universidad de Zaragoza, Intel, among others.
