'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

The arguer draws a conclusion that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin from the responses of a group of volunteers in a study that asks them to wash their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess for a month. At first glance, the argument seems to be sound and convincing. Unfortunately, if we make a careful consideration, doubt would be cast on the arguer's conclusion.

First of all, all evidence provided by the arguer is the mere study, not anything else. We have no idea about the samples of the study. How old are they? How about the condition of their face? If the volunteers participated in the study happened to have the same facial problem, maybe we can only infer that Luxess is effective to the specific problem. It is equally possible that most of volunteers are the aged. In this case, the study can only inform us Luxess would be suitable to the old-age people.

Furthermore, the study is carried out in just a month. It is too short for an experiment in the face cream to observe the effect. As we know, sometimes, chronically using a face cream would bring some side effects. How does the arguer demonstrate that Luxess would not be harmful to the consumer in the future? Another possibility is that weather in the month when the study is carried out is so mild that the face condition of all people is improved. Besides, the arguer may overlook some other factors that could improve the facial skin in the study such as the mild soap, which could also be a cause. Moreover, as the arguer describe, the Luxess is only used in every morning, we can't rule out the other possibility that volunteers would use their own face cream in night which could markedly improve the facial condition.

Finally, in the argument, the arguer does not show us a medical report that would be more convincing than a study of consumer responses. We have every reason to consider the result of the study as the consumer's psychological feeling of the new face cream. If the arguer could give us a medical analysis on the facial condition of the volunteers, the reasoning may be strengthened largely.

In sum, the mere result from a study of volunteers could not convince us of the true effect of the new cream. Some more information should be added and a long observation may be carried out in the sight of medicine.
